U.S. Suspends Aid to Nicaraguan Courts

. . Saturday November 29, 2003 4:01 AM

MANAGUA, Nicaragua (AP) - The United States suspended aid payments to Nicaragua's judiciary on Friday, a day after the court told America to stay out of its business, the U.S. Embassy said.

The suspension of $49 million in aid followed escalating tensions between Washington and Nicaragua after a Sandinista judge released former president Arnoldo Aleman from prison Wednesday to house arrest, citing health concerns.

/snip/

The former president's release was widely seen as a goodwill signal from the Sandinistas to the Aleman-dominated center-right governing party, and the U.S. State Department said it appeared to ``be a politically manipulated decision.''

Angry about the State Department criticism, Nicaragua's highest court released a statement Thursday that said, ``We don't accept interference in judicial cases, which affects and damages our sovereignty.''

"We don't accept interference in judicial cases, which affects and damages our sovereignty."

1. Wow! So Bush's presidency is trying to shove people around here, too?
Is there a country he ISN'T trying to intimidate?

These poor countries have just been taking it for so long. I just googled and saw that we were insisting on conservative governments in Nicaragua as far back as 1909:

United States Intervention, 1909-33

The closer you look, the more you see that each one of these countries has its own story of being bullied but good by one or more of our administrations. That's a damned shame.

I'll bet they DO want us to bugger off. Thanks for posting the article.
