W.House: Democrats' extreme left defeated Lieberman

CRAWFORD, Texas, Aug 9 (Reuters) - The White House accused the Democratic Party on Wednesday of catering to the extreme left after Connecticut voters defeated Sen. Joe Lieberman in a primary election over his support of the Iraq war.

Foreshadowing a debate likely to play itself out in November congressional elections, White House spokesman Tony Snow called the election a defining moment for the Democratic Party.

"I know a lot of people have tried to make this a referendum on the president. I would flip it. I think instead it's a defining moment for the Democratic Party whose national leaders now have made it clear that if you disagree with the extreme left in their party, they're going to come after you," he said.

...

But Snow said the vote did not reflect American views on Bush's policies, but rather how the Democratic Party dealt with the Iraq war and other issues of national security.

100. You might consider this
Consider that only 52% of Democrats voted for the Anti-War
candidate while 48% voted for the Pro-War candidate, or as
Lamont would say it... the Pro-Bush candidate. By the way,
these numbers were compiled in a primary and we all know that
primaries are heavily weighed into by the activist wing of the
party more than the moderates.

Now if you consider this a referendum on President Bush, and
believe that Joe Lieberman kisses up to the President the only
logical conclusion is that the CT primary is a success for the
President.

Now watch them go through a meltdown over the next few weeks.....they will be hysterical, absolutely grasping at straws like someone who is drowning & hanging on to anything within reach.

Think of the movie Indiana Jones, at the end of the movie. Those men who stole the Ark open the Lid, and their faces slide off.

That's what we can expect in the next few weeks in Washington.....

in Michigan. An incumbent republican congressman was defeated because he did not hate enough, he was not ignorant enough, he was not a bush slave even though bush endorsed him. The winner of the primary (name eludes me) is a snake handler, a hater in the name of Jesus Christ, a fucking lunatic constitution hating bastard; a "mainstream" republican candidate.

8. "Snow said Bush had no plans to campaign for Lieberman,"

But Snow said the vote did not reflect American views on Bush's policies, but rather how the Democratic Party dealt with the Iraq war and other issues of national security.

Lieberman, a three-term senator and vice presidential nominee in 2000, filed petitions on Wednesday to run as an independent against Lamont.

Snow said Bush had no plans to campaign for Lieberman, who has made clear he will still vote on the Democratic side if elected as an independent.

10. Lieberman loss offers signs of angry electorate
HARTFORD, Connecticut (Reuters) - U.S. Sen. Joseph Lieberman's defeat in Connecticut offered tangible evidence of Democratic anger with President George W. Bush and the Iraq war and could be an early sign of a strong anti-incumbent mood before November's election, analysts said on Wednesday.

80. "There is no "anti-security wing" of the Democratic Party." - Clark
"You see, despite what Joe Lieberman believes, invading Iraq and diverting our attention away from Al Qaeda and Osama bin Laden is not being strong on national security. Blind allegiance to George W. Bush and his failed "stay the course" strategy is not being strong on national security. And no, Senator Lieberman, no matter how you demonize your opponents, there is no "antisecurity wing" of the Democratic Party."

There is a recruiting crisis right now because too many people like to fight "culture wars" at their keyboard, rather than joining up and fighting in a real war. I think that looks pretty weak myself. Pathetic, in fact.

52. The VOTERS of Connecticut defeated Lieberman
No more, no less.

Why do the repukes want SoreLoserman in there so bad? Could it be the same reason that the voters of Connecticut decided to pick a new candidate?

58. I saw this and it was as though the press sec was campaigning for office
He had to keep stopping himself when he said "I think" to say "rather, it's the Bush/the WH position".

And no, he didn't mention any of the Republicans who've also called for withdrawal.

71. Part of their strategy
is to always appear just slightly more aggressive than the Dem's. When the Dem's stand up and take action like this (which was just awesome) it scares the heck out of them.

The more Dem's do this and stand up for their beliefs the better.

72. this WH is anti-democracy ... that much is clear
How else could the will of a majority of Democrats be spun as "catering to the extreme left"? How can it be extreme when most Dems (ie, a majority, the party's freakin' mainstream really) are aligned with Lamont and clearly tired of the status quo/stay the course route? This is just doublespeak babbling from Tony Snow; expect more of it.

74. We're letting them frame the issue again --
We lose because we let the Repugs define us. When the votes were counted our party had no clear statement about Lamont's win (not Liberman's loss] so the Repugs get to spin it as a takeover by the fringe Left.

Our leaders should have been on every talk show all day with the exact same message: Lamont won because he represents the 60% of Americans who think Iraq was wrong, and the more than 60% who think * is doing a lousy job at everything.

What did Jon Stewart say to Howard Dean? "Bush has the lowest approval rate ever, the Republicans are caught up in scandals, Tom Delay and Scooter Libby have been indicted -- so, how do the Democrats plan to blow it this November?"

Letting the Repugs get the first word is a good (bad) start...

Lamont's views are more consistent with most Americans' positions on Iraq.

103. Joe abandoned us first.
He's worked nonstop with the Democratic Leadership Council to transform the Democratic Party from its previous New Deal roots as the champion of working people, minorities, and the poor to a party that caters to the needs of Wall Street and to the upper middle class; he won't admit Bush's war on terror is a failure when 60% of the nation sees it so; and he weighed in with the wingnuts during the Terri Schiavo debacle.

Go, Joe, go. Just go away.

84. Please, spare us
I don't like stupid neocons telling lies on the Democratic Party. It was all about the war plain and simple. The people made a decision and that is their right

And they have some nerve after what they did to Joe Schwarz in Michigan, for not being a kooky right-wing fascist. That was an example of someone being thrown out for not agreeing with the extremist.

Edited on Thu Aug-10-06 08:14 AM by OnionPatch
And when was the last time you heard anyone on television even say the phrase "extreme right"? It's as if the extreme right doesn't exist (although they've been ruining our country and a lot of the world along with it for six years now.)

102. Mehlman refused to endorse the republican candidate
On Hardball Chris Matthews kept asking him if republicans should vote for the republican or for Lieberman, and he said they should vote for whoever they want. In other words, the republicans are going to back Lieberman to screw Lamont so they can claim that the public is not against the war.

Note how the WH is silent on that race? It doesn't fit into their propaganda that the Democratic Party has been overtaken by the "loonie left" so they merely eliminate all reference to it from their talking points.
