Woman Escapes Abduction in Minnesota
Woman Escapes Abduction in Fertile, Minn., 45 Miles From North Dakota Disappearance Site

The Associated Press

FERTILE, Minn. Nov. 29 — Less than a week after a North Dakota college student disappeared from the shopping mall where she worked, a young woman leaving work at a store 45 miles away was abducted, but was able to escape, police say.

Polk County Sheriff Mark LeTexier said it was too soon to connect the kidnapping late Friday in Fertile and the suspected abduction Nov. 22 in Grand Forks, N.D., of Dru Sjodin, a University of North Dakota student. But he said investigators were converging on this northwestern Minnesota community of fewer than 1,000 people.

"They'll be working 100 miles an hour on this," he said.

The young woman, who was not identified, told authorities she was walking to her car after leaving work at a Hartz grocery store Friday when a man abducted her, LeTexier said.

She was able to escape when his car slowed down, and she ran to a nearby house to get help, authorities said. She said the vehicle smelled of cigarette smoke, but she apparently was not able to give police a further description of the man or the car, which sped away.

"She just ran," LeTexier said. "She didn't look back."

1. It looks as though there's a kind of serial killer renaissance going on
THere's the DC snipers, the West Virginia sniper, the Colombus, Ohio sniper, the Pizza delivery guy (remember him?), all in the last year or so. Haven't seen this kind of seemingly random serial violence since the Carter Administration.

And is it me, or does it seem like the police don't crack these cases until it's too late?

3. She must have been terrified
but it's also possible the state Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is witholding some of the information to get a jump on the guy.

6. There are usually around 25-35 serials...
"working" in the US at any given time. Years before it became "hip" to study it, I was interested in this subject. I felt it reflected the war on women, and it does, but I found it went beyond that. On the cultural 'nurture' side it reflects our war on humanity, imo.

The cops don't find them until it's too late because while the killers have a pattern in their heads and behavior - it's not that easily seen by law enforcement until the killer's been at it for a while. They may be "working" in multiple states, counties, towns, whatever. They often target "easy prey" like prostitutes or hustlers, victims who won't be immediately missed or hugely alarming to the community. Appalling - of course - but that's reality. It used to be that communication among/between jurisdictions was non-existent, but they've come a long way in the past couple of decades. Still - the killer usually doesn't actually know their victims - that's what makes it so tough to find them. There's no traceable connection within the victims' lives.

Most academics and scientists believe that it's both nature and nurture, though they haven't found much on the 'nature' side yet. There was one study done that found two 'nature' indicators. One common factor among serials was early head trauma. Not just 'little Johnny bumped his noggin' but a serious head injury at a young age. The other was in a sleeping EEG study. The usual EEG didn't find anything. When it was expanded, they found extreme and unusual 'deep spikes' in brain activity during extended sleep monitoring. Who the hell knows what that means - but that's what they found.

On the 'nurture' side, there are a lot of common factors, I won't do the whole laundry list. It was essentially the same factors that can contribute to anybody being really fucked up. There was a fascinating interview with Ted Bundy's mother, Louise, after his arrest and at least one conviction. It may have been for Vanity Fair, I don't remember, but the guy had previously interviewed Ted - at length. Anyway, Louise is holding up his Boy Scout uniform (freaky pic) talking about what a good boy he was and saying she couldn't believe it, he was a perfect child and blah blah blah. Very oddly disconnected from what they were actually talking about. In describing her, the writer said that she was facile, chatty, charming and that the lights were on, but nobody was really home. He said that talking to Louise was a lot like talking to Ted. I always found that tid-bit fascinating.

So, interestingly, the next country on the "how many serial killers do you breed" list is Germany. But rest easy, or uneasy, friends! We're still number one, by a wide margin.

7. further explanation
Interesting post, dvddrone.

I would also add, that in addition, we should ask why does the US have a much higher percentage of mass murderers than any other country? Some people have the genetic potential, but environmental factors help determine who act on it. An explanation I'd suggest is the role of our own government. We don't know how many thousands of people have been victims of mind control experiments in the US, but it's a lot, and way more than any other country. Little known fact: both Jeffrey Dahmer and Ted Kazinski were participants in MKUltra experiments when younger. There was a fascinating Atlantic Monthly article about the Unabomber about a year ago that looked into the MKUltra experiments that messed up his mind while he was studying at Harvard.

The US treats it's people like guinea pigs, usually without their knowledge. In fact, my father was exposed to a nuclear bomb test explosion while a soldier in the 1950s, and my mother was an unwitting subject in CIA experimentation into LSD while taking a Psych 101 course in college. Luckily neither suffered ill effects.

I think it would be a really interesting study to look at all the mass murderers and see how many more of them were experimentation victims. We've made a lot of really damaged people, just like all the messed up Vietnam war vets.
