Microsoft probes new Explorer holes
<http://money.cnn.com/2003/11/28/technology/microsoft.reut/>

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp. is investigating a report of seven new security holes in its Internet Explorer browser discovered by a Chinese researcher, a company spokesman said on Friday.

The spokesman said Microsoft (MSFT: Research, Estimates) is not aware of anyone actively exploiting the holes or of any impact on customers.

Two holes are critical and could allow an attacker to run a program that would delete files, crash the machine or take control of it from a remote location, said Russ Cooper of TruSecure Corp. who edits the NTBugTraq e-mail list.

I'd bet money MS leaves holes like these open, mandated by the US government burried in fine print some wherr in the legal settlements.

1. I love the theory that if you strung enough Microsoft patches together,
you might get a software program.

I have filled my hard drive with Explorer patches then it will be time to get a bigger pc with a larger hard drive. Good excuse for a new pc. Gives me something to look forward to besides the creeping* fascism.

"Apache Server", because it is A Patchy (web) Server. And a damn good one... They just get the patches out proactivly.

as boring as Bill Gates' phony philanthropy, aren't they?

Give one of the Mozilla broswers a try, and I predict you'll say adios to Internet Explorer.

Gates: We must improve security
By Robert Lemos

Forward in Format for

Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates has set security as the top priority for the software maker's products, a shift that analysts say can't happen soon enough.

(snip)(snip)

"When we face a choice between adding features and resolving security issues, we need to choose security," Gates wrote in the e-mail, a copy of which was forwarded to CNET News.com. "Our products should emphasize security right out of the box."

Calling the new initiative "Trustworthy Computing," Gates billed it as the "highest priority" for the company.

(snip)(snip)

Last month, the company revealed a serious flaw in its flagship Windows XP operating system--software that had supposedly benefited from its latest push for program security, known as the Secure Windows Initiative. The efforts have produced mixed results.

In addition, the Code Red and Nimda Internet worms last year attacked vulnerabilities in Microsoft's Internet Information Server Software. In November, a flaw in Microsoft's Passport authentication protocol--a key part of .Net--allowed intruders to access consumer financial data stored in the company's Wallet, an e-commerce buying service

13. just a few years ago, "probing holes" would have been left out of any main
stream publication's headlines. and furthermore, "anyone actively exploiting the holes" would have been left out as well.

as we slide down the slippery slope of the media appealing to the least-common denominator, let us remember that most of this tendency toward corrupting the headlines with sexual innuendo is being done by the sheeple-controlling right-wing media.

14. OK, it might be late-breaking...
...but is it news? I always thought it was a bulletin, like the weather forcast. A bit like the "Shock horror, 2 US soldiers killed in Iraq" News.
It would be news it if it didn't happen for a week? :argh:

18. Another word...
... Opera!

I use Opera for most of my browsing, and thanks to its great user interface, it is easy to have 30-40 pages open at once and switch between them with one click. Opera has a free version that includes a banner at the top, register it and the banner goes away.

Opera has a boatload of cool features. If you are tired of IE, give it a try. www.opera.com
