Bush reelection team looking to register 3 million voters

By Dan Balz and Mike Allen, Washington Post, 11/30/2003

President Bush's reelection team, anticipating another close election, has begun to assemble one of the largest grass-roots organizations of any modern presidential campaign, using enormous financial resources and lack of primary opposition to seize an early advantage over the Democrats in the battle to mobilize voters in 2004.

Bush's campaign website already has signed up 6 million supporters, 10 times the number that Democratic presidential candidate Howard Dean has, and the Bush operation is in the middle of an unprecedented drive to register 3 million new Republican voters. The campaign has set county vote targets in some states and has begun training thousands of volunteers who will recruit an army of door-to-door canvassers for the final days of the election next November.

The entire project, which includes complementary efforts by the Republican National Committee and state Republican parties, is designed to tip the balance in 18 states that both sides believe will determine the winner in 2004.

"I've never seen grass roots like this," said a veteran GOP operative in one of the battleground states.

Dean, a former governor of Vermont, has made major strides in organizing a grass-roots campaign in a bid for his party's nomination. His advisers say it is the largest in the history of presidential politics.

While saying he is not familiar with all the details of Dean's grass-roots and Internet efforts, Bush campaign manager Ken Mehlman said, "Our goal is for the largest grass-roots effort ever."

3. Let them do what they want...
the registered R's aren't too happy these days w/ them...Last nite I was checking out at the grocery store and the topic of conversation was politics, of course. I find out that the checker is a registered R, 18yr old guy. I brought up the upcoming draft in 2005. This guy said he's NOT voting for him the next time and neither is his family because of what he's done. I told him THANK YOU, and be sure to tell his friends, family, and whoever else, what I just discussd with him. And, with the way things are going now and especially after the phony turkey day dinner, people aren't as stupid.

4. now, then, of course....

register 3 million new Republican voters

is not the same as saying that they'll find 3 million people who will vote republican, but that they will have on paper added 3 million republicans.

21. I am telling you, good ol' volunteerism is where we will beat these R's...
In order to sign up these 3 million new R's, quite a lot of W's warchest will go to PAY people to register new voters whereas we will be doing it for free... just because we want to save this country.

35. No, no, no....that's not what I meant

Considering their history of fabricating votes, I seriously doubt that these "voters" will be actual people.

I expect them to "vote the cemetery" or fabricate identities to achieve this.

8. Spin
The more I read about this, the more I'm convinced it's no more than spin to counter the remarkable real grassroots successes of some of our candidates. Imho, they're blowing smoke. They've lost lots of people who voted for * in 2000, and they know it.

13. Scary it may be...
if it works, but they seem a bit late in this get out the vote drive.

Democrats, and their supporters, have been doing it for years. This is, after all, democracy in action, and it just means we have to work harder in out own voter registration drives.

The Dixie Chicks, btw, just gave $100,000 to Rock the Vote, and last month Springsteen told a stadium full of people to impeach Shrub.

Hit the streets, be proud to be an American in opposition to the thugs, and don't let them claim they invented voting, too.

Be sure to have them send you lots of blank voter registration applications. Let them know which heavily Republican areas you will be covering, so that they won't need to go there.

17. they're near maxed out and they're desperate
this is a pure sign of desperation and I don't think it'll work.

They've already politicized all the "christian" fundamentalist churches and I am not sure they will have that large of a pool of people to be registered who are not already. And the fundies especially are a minority in this country. Is this a ploy to cover up what will be huge numbers of fraudulent votes registered in Diebold machines?

This is just one more sign of desperation; they know they cannot win a free and fair election.

We should all be advocating the efforts of groups like MoveOn, and in particular America Coming Together. ACT is a massive get out the vote effort by numerous progressive organizations. Give your money or give your time. They are going to make a difference.

33. THIS is SO TRUE!!
I get it-
The pukes can just let everyone know they've signed up 3 million even if they've signed up just 1.

-Then, they may not even have to come up with 3 million ficticious "names"--- no one will check up on it anyway.
then just get Deibold to press all the rest of the buttons so these new
"recruits" don't have to actually show up at the polls and the STRANGE election results won't even be questioned.

34. An email message ..
If you haven't gotten this on your mail lists yet you will. Someone is
sending around news that bush has 6,000,000 volunteers and so much money
that the dems have no chance. This is bullshit and here's why. First, more
than  likely the 6 mill figure is from everyone who has ever contacted the
white house. I believe it's totally bogus. You're welcome to believe Rove is
telling the truth. Your call. Second, remember the electoral college? That
thing that screwed us in 2000? Here's how it works. They can have every
single resident of, say, Mississippi vote for bush and it doesn't get them 1
more electoral vote. Not 1. What this is is simply more of the conservative
doctrine of inevitability. They merely wish to make us give up hope. This
"leak" should be seen for what it really is, a sign that they are scared.
Ignore this 6 million crap and get back to work. Being afraid of their
numbers doesn't help us one bit. Peace.

(I didn't write this ... FWIW)
