U.S. says nuclear double-standard on Iran justified

BERLIN (Reuters) - The United States acknowledged on Monday it was employing a double-standard in its divergent approaches to India and
Iran's nuclear programs, but said its policies were justified by the behavior of the two countries.

"Is there a double-standard? Yeah. There should be," said U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Richard Boucher, when asked whether a civilian nuclear cooperation deal between Washington and New Delhi might send the wrong message to Iran.

Boucher, who is in charge of central and south Asian affairs in the State Department, was in Berlin for discussions with German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier on topics ranging from
Afghanistan to India and central Asia.

........

The deal would enable India, long treated as a nuclear pariah, to receive American atomic technology and fuel, even though it has not signed the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and has already developed atomic bombs.

2. "Yeah. There should be" is a blatant demonstration of their arrogance
They are completely out of control at this point and I fear for the future of this nation.

3. I wonder if Boucher knows what double-standard actually means.
A single standard treats countries the same when they act differently. A double standard treats countries differently when they act the same.

So which is it?

4. what about the gold-plated supersize double standard of US nuclear
weapons?

are we the "good guys" so we can have all the atomic power/weapons/technology we want?

what a load of crap! I used to love this country, but I wouldn't mind if the rest of the world took it down a notch or two from its exalted role of world bully and superpower-meddler/mensch.

5. Maybe Iran should start importing US jobs. Maybe that's why we
like India so much. They readily take our jobs and they have that cheap labor force which they send over here to take more jobs away.

7. This is foreign policy as farce.
The Bushies are not even trying to be credible in their policies.
The national interest is what serves the immediate self interest
of the administration and its corporate backers. Damn the wider
consequences.

India's rogue behavior should be forgiven because it presents
trade opportunities while Iran should be punished. And the
administration not seem to care if hypocrisy undermines America's
credibility.

10. Pakistan harbors Al-qaeda, scientist who gave away nuke secrets,
and overthrew their democratically elected government and put a militray hunta in place. So whose behavior leads one to believe that nukes might be used against others? Plus the behavior of the US in WWII, making the US the ONLY nation to have ever used nukes against civilians, suggests that Iran needs nukes to defend against the known nuke terrorists, the US.

12. America is as credible as the Third Reich
If you recall, Hitler made the claim on September 1, 1939, that Germany had been attacked by Poland and that her forces were responding to Polish aggression.

13. He doesn't understand the meaning of "double standard" then
"Is there a double-standard? Yeah. There should be," said U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Richard Boucher, when asked whether a civilian nuclear cooperation deal between Washington and New Delhi might send the wrong message to Iran."

A standard with multiple factors is not the same as a double standard. The former can be acceptable, the latter never can. A diplomat should know better.
