Colo. worker wins transgender bias case
DENVER - A woman who was fired while preparing to undergo sex-change surgery was let go in violation of state anti-discrimination law, the head of Colorado's civil rights agency has ruled.

Advocates praised the ruling, saying it was the first of its kind in Colorado and a sign that society has begun to better understand transgender people.

Danielle Cornwell, 54, claimed in a complaint filed in April with the Civil Rights Division that she was fired in July 2005 because she was a woman and because she had recently told the company she planned to undergo gender-reassignment surgery.

Originally known as David Michael Cornwell, she had realized while working for Intermountain Testing Co. that she was a transgender woman, according to the ruling. She began assuming a feminine appearance, and also told her employer she planned to change her name and dress in women's clothing.

4. question
I'm a guy. I was wondering if women ever realize they want to be men? I don't hear of that like I do men saying they realize they are women trapped in a man's body. Obviously, the genitalia issue is something they can't work around, but I was just wondering...

5. Yes they do.
We have a few FTM transgendered here. Perhaps they will see this and answer your questions, as I cannot. I just don't have that much experience with it.

6. There are many Female to Males
I am married to one. He is working in his first job in which he is known as male. His drivers license says male but the birth certificate still says female and at this moment it's unknown what will be needed to change that. Homeland security has some say about those things nowadays.

Most F2Ms don't get the bottom surgery, it's not very good. Once a week he is injected with Testosterone. The Testosterone enlarges the clitoris, body hair grows, and the voice deepens. And he doesn't need top surgery since he was never very large there, just needs to start working out more. :)

We are legally married because he was female at the time. The name change was very easy and most of the people we dealt with barely registered any reaction at all. Much to my surprise.

It is unknown what medical problems he will later have from the testosterone. His insurance pays for nothing it's all out of pocket.

2. Wow... gutsy to go through the process ...
while employed at a long term job, deal with all the attitudes, then stick to her guns and file suit and WIN. That is one fearless and self-confident person.

3. Discrimination is just plain evil.
No matter who it is. People have the right to be honored as they are.
The CO civil rights agency makes a good move here.

10. Awesome! Love the logic, too
The basis of the case was her being fired for being a woman, it seems, not for being a transgendered woman. That's the right kind of logic, IMO.

I had my first job interview today using my new name, btw :-)
