Mica calls for hearings in Central Florida on OxyContin

Noelle C. Haner

Staff Writer

U.S. Congressman John L. Mica has requested a House oversight committee hearing be held in Central Florida to examine the growing problem of OxyContin abuse.

"The abuse of this drug has resulted in record numbers of deaths in not only Central Florida but across the nation," says Mica in a prepared statement.

According to a Florida medical examiners report, more fatalities were caused by OxyContin and its generic equivalent oxycodone between 2001 and 2002 than from heroin. In Florida alone, 573 overdoses were attributed to the prescription pain medication over that period.

2. He's a Republican, too! This is terrific news.
Sounds as if he has no interest in trying to protect right-wing lunatic Rush Limbaugh.

4. From Mica's web site:
"In politics there are talkers and doers -
John Mica is a doer."
President George W. Bush
During a visit to Daytona Beach,
January 30, 2002

On the Government Reform Committee, Mica serves on the Subcommittee on Criminal Justice, Drug Policy and Human Resources, he chaired from 1999 through 2000. As Chairman he led efforts to restart our nation's war on drugs. The Subcommittee on Civil Service, which he chaired from 1995 through 1998. As Chairman he downsized the Office of Personnel Management, privatized federal agencies and reformed the federal employees life insurance program. Congressman Mica introduced the Veterans Employment Opportunity Act which was signed into law and recognizes veterans service as federal employment both for hiring and in times of downsizing. He authored legislation to expand healthcare options by opening our Federal Employees Health Benefits Plan (FEHBP) to our military dependents and retirees.

Mica is a graduate of the University of Florida (1967) and Miami-Dade Community College (1965). He is active in national and community affairs, and is listed in Who's Who in American Politics. He is a member of the Delta Chi Fraternity and Florida Blue Key. His brother, Dan Mica, also served for ten years as a United States Congressman from South Florida.

Well, isn't this a surprise. Starting the spin for Rush.

7. Wow! Big outsourcing fan here as well. Check out this site.
http://www.outsourcecongress.org:81/mica/

Rep. John L. Mica, please take notice from your colleague, the Honorable Colorado Rep. Tom Tancredo:

Colorado Rep. Tom Tancredo, on the house floor, June 18, 2003
"Washington (June 18) -- "When my colleagues get a letter from a constituent who has been displaced by foreign workers, they should write back to them and say, 'It is the policy of this government to displace you, to move you into a lower economic income category, because we believe in cheap labor and we believe the politics of open borders helps our party.'" --

Update as of 5/20/2003:

Rep. Mica's bill H.R. 2154 - PRO-Outsourcing bill does NOT protect American workers like he states.
Read how his bill will destroy more American jobs The H.R. 2154 - "the Mica bill" Pro-Outsourcing bill

I think it should be done nation-wide. Maybe we could finally get those ENRON thugs in jail along with a few of this administration.
