AP: FEMA Trailers Freed Up for Other Uses
FEMA Trailers Freed Up for Other Uses
Nearly 10,000 FEMA trailers sitting empty in Arkansas freed up for other uses

HOPE, Ark., Oct. 1, 2006

(AP) Nearly 10,000 emergency housing trailers that were intended to be sent
to the Gulf Coast to help Hurricane Katrina victims have been freed up for
other uses.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency parked the trailers at Hope Municipal
Airport in the months following the hurricane. The agency came under criticism
when the trailers sat empty.

FEMA officials said that regulations against placing the homes in flood plains
prevented their use on the Gulf Coast.

On Friday, Congress approved a homeland security spending bill that included
a provision allowing FEMA to sell or donate the trailers to municipalities,
nonprofit groups or American Indian tribes.

8. It would have taken 5 min to Amend the Law..
So many people went without needed shelter and were involuntarily displaced to other states,
simply because these trailers sat vacant.

10. If This Was In Another Era...
They would be utilized for low income...single room occupancy...etc. We have people in this country sleeping under a bridge, living out of their cars and every day someone loses their home to fire or other disasters. People get sick, can't work and can't afford their house payment. They end up out on their ear. Yet the "idgits fidgit" in D.C. pondering what they should do with housing units. They are truly clueless as well as heartless.

14. So, rather than letting gulf coast people use them, they are passing them
on?

""Indian housing has been a problem for decades. According to a 2003 survey, an estimated 200,000 housing units are needed immediately in Indian country and approximately 90,000 Indian families are homeless or "under-housed."

And these are adequate housing for anyone but temporary? Why the hell have they not been released to gulf coasters who need a place to live while they fix up their homes? Yes, some have exploded. Yes, they are full of formaldahyde, or were when they were new, perhaps outgassed now, but what about people who can't fix their places because they have nowhere to stay while they do? Send them to which Indians where? And these qualify as not being "under housed"?

Finally, this part makes me really angry: "FEMA officials said that regulations against placing the homes in flood plains prevented their use on the Gulf Coast.". Gulf coast is in a flood plain? Gee, who would have guessed? Not FEMA when they ordered the trailers. They figured it out after getting the trailers to Arkansas?
