Further Airbus A380 Delivery Delays Lead Emirates to 'Review Options'

Emirates Airlines, the largest customer for Airbus's troubled A380 superjumbo, is "reviewing all options" after being told to expect a further delay of almost one year, the airline's chief executive said.

The new holdup comes on top of a one-year delay already announced by Airbus. European Aeronautic Defence & Space Co., which owns 80% of Airbus, said on Sept. 21 that further delays were likely but gave no details. Meanwhile, Lufthansa of Germany said it has received notification from EADS that it will receive its first A380 in summer 2009, one year later than scheduled.

Dubai-based Emirates, which accounts for 43 of the 159 A380s on order from Airbus, originally expected to receive the two-deck aircraft early this year. That was pushed to next spring by two six-month delays, the first announced in 2005 and the second in June. Emirates now expects to start getting A380s no sooner than 2008.
