Porter urges suspension of House page program
Edited on Wed Oct-04-06 11:57 AM by NVMojo
(IMHO, this is nothing more than a ploy to save Hastert's ass)

WASHINGTON -- Rep. Jon Porter on Tuesday called for the House page program to be put on hold until Congress can get to the bottom of a former congressman's sexually explicit e-mail exchanges with teenage boys.

"I am supporting an immediate suspension of the page program until we have the opportunity to make sure the students are safe," said Porter, R-Nev. "This is changing by the minute. We want to make sure these kids are safe and protected."

Porter became at least the third House member to call for the page program to be placed on the back burner as the scandal continued to rock Capitol Hill and threatened House Republican leaders.

Some conservatives and the Washington Times on Tuesday called for House Speaker Dennis Hastert, R-Ill., to resign. They said he had failed to respond earlier this year to red flags that former Rep. Mark Foley, R-Fla., had written "overly friendly" e-mails to a 16-year-old male page.

15. Repugs: "We can't control our congressmen so lets remove the temptation."
It's like packing up all the alcohol because an alcoholic has come to visit. Repugs admit they can't control their membership from hitting on the children/pages so.... remove the pages. Remove the temptation

23. omigosh, read this, more here! This is hysterical!!!

POLITICAL FALLOUT

Rep. Jon Porter said, "Former Rep. Foley's actions are inexcusable and if anyone, whether that be a member or staffer, had prior knowledge about the gravity of this situation and did nothing to rectify it, they should be removed from their positions." Porter did not name anyone. He also called for House Speaker Dennis Hastert to suspend the page program until the FBI probe is complete.

Porter's Democratic challenger, Tessa Hafen, said she was appalled at Porter's unwillingness "to press House leaders accused of hiding the truth about crimes involving one of their own."

Rep. Shelley Berkley said rather than suspend the page program, "I think we ought to suspend Congress and keep the kids working."

Rep. Jim Gibbons, the GOP candidate for governor, said, "Certainly if there's a thorough and aggressive investigation and it's shown the speaker was involved, then he should be held accountable."

19. It's apparent that the safety of the Pages HAS been compromised
And, as long as one Page is in danger, all are. Also, who knows how many other male AND female pages have been harassed, stalked, even molested and assaulted.

8. HAHAHA, why is that Porter?
cuz you are having a problem keeping yourself under control.

What the hell is this saying other than that the problem is much bigger and widespread than they care to admit?

Hey, Foley isn't there anymore, so why is the safety of the youths in the program questioned???

This goes right along with "Let's close and DEMOLISH abu ghraib." It's the ol' outta site is outta mind theory i guess.

30. How about changing the legal adult age back to 18 where
it should be....only in DC they get away with that one.......16 is not an adult!!!!! I was shocked to find this out today! Of course if he (foley) had sex in Florida, it's 18.

I've got a feeling this story is alot bigger than we think???

Is the solution, then, to shut down all of these as well?

21. Those programs are much more structured than the Page program
There si very, very little oversight in the Page program. I know someone who's nephew did this a few years ago, and they said they aren't surprised about this at all -- that the program is almost set up for something like this to easily happen.

What a great talking point - "so you are admitting you can't be trusted, so we should punish the kids?" Isn't there something in that holy book you're always thumping about resisting temptation?
