CNN/Reuters: Over 100 mayors vow to snuff out gun crime
Mayors vow to snuff out gun crime
October 5, 2006

BOSTON, Massachusetts (Reuters) -- New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Boston Mayor Thomas Menino said Thursday the mayors of more than 100 U.S. cities have joined their effort to get illegal guns off America's streets after a spike in violent crime.

They pledged to increase gun control and impose stiffer penalties on illegal weapons traffickers. They also announced plans for regional intelligence databases to track illegal firearms and a new Web site on gun-trafficking legislation.

Gun violence has dominated the headlines after a man armed with three guns and 600 rounds of ammunition burst into an Amish school in Pennsylvania on Tuesday and killed five girls, the third deadly school shooting in a week.

"More than 100 mayors across the country have stood up to say, 'Enough is enough -- illegal guns don't belong in our streets,'" Bloomberg told a news conference in Boston....

Bloomberg and Menino were joined by Yonkers, New York, Mayor Phil Amicone and Providence, Rhode Island, Mayor David Ciciline for the announcement in Boston, where there were 75 murders last year -- a 10-year high....

2. Blame the other guy.

While Massachusetts laws are relatively strict, requiring a $100 state permit for each gun purchase, buying a gun in neighboring Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine is easier.

And yet, the VT, NH and ME gun crime rate is lower than MA or NY. How does one explain that?

Speaking from experiance... the MA gun laws aren't "relatively strict"... they're obscene.

Stalin would have a smile on his face knowing what Menino and Bloomburg are proposing.

And FWIW... the part about MA "requiring a $100 state permit for each gun purchase" is totally inaccurate.

There's a $100.00 fee for a 6 year license to purchase and posses a handgun or high capacity firearm (at the local police chiefs discretion), not for each single purchase.

WRT the issuance of such licenses... the abuses and discretion by police chiefs here are well documented.

buying a gun in neighboring Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine is easier.

Easier?...

Lets just say states that acknowledge the Bill of Rights and not cave in to the whims and hand-wringing of a few asshat/pin-head mayors that can't find other solutions instead of placing the blame elsewhere.

Police suspected in man's beating

No charges, arrests in incident involving off-duty officers at party
By JOHN DIEDRICH

Frank Jude Jr. suffered a brutal beating on a street in Milwaukee's Bay View neighborhood early Oct. 24. Surrounded by a dozen men, he was kicked repeatedly in the head, stripped naked and threatened with a knife, his attorney said.

Frank Jude Jr. is shown at St. Francis Hospital on Oct. 24, 2004 after being severely beaten early that morning.

Information Needed

Anyone with information about the incident Oct. 24 on a Bay View street and has not come forward is asked to call the District Attorney's office at (414) 278-4653. Authorities knew right away who was involved, but more than three months later no one has been charged or even arrested.

The suspects? Off-duty Milwaukee police officers who claimed Jude stole one of their badges. The officers said they had to subdue Jude because he fought with them.

Witnesses tell a different story - that Jude didn't steal anything, that he wasn't resisting, and that the some of the crowd dragged him out of a truck and beat him maliciously.
