Olbermann News Commentaries Target Bush

By DAVID BAUDER
The Associated Press
Sunday, October 8, 2006; 1:00 PM

NEW YORK -- Keith Olbermann's tipping point came on a tarmac in Los Angeles six weeks ago. While waiting for his plane to take off he read an account of Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld's speech before the American Legion equating Iraq War opponents to pre-World War II appeasers.

The next night, on Aug. 30, Olbermann ended his MSNBC "Countdown" show with a blistering retort, questioning both the interpretation of history and Rumsfeld's very understanding of what it means to be an American.

It was the first of now five extraordinarily harsh anti-Bush commentaries that have made Olbermann the latest media point-person in the nation's political divide.

"As a critic of the administration, I will be damned if you can get away with calling me the equivalent of a Nazi appeaser," Olbermann told The Associated Press. "No one has the right to say that about any free-speaking American in this country."

4. How long before Olbermann 'disappears'?
I have to think that he's gotta be near the top of the list. I'm sure that Rove has some sort of unfortunate "accident" in the works for him. Olbermann speaks power to the truth, and does so more eloquently than anyone I've heard to date.

6. They can't do that now: their 'crime' would be much too obvious...
And the thing the narcissick dictatorturer fears the most is to look bad.

Edited on Sun Oct-08-06 04:04 PM by Amonester
reproach is in free fall (for the first time since Katrina), and these crazy nuts who still support this new dictatorture junta R a shrinking minority.

KO is a brave man. He calls the shots like he sees them.
He (still) has the freedom to speak the truth!
Because that's what a real Democracy is about!
Fearless. And that's what matters the most.

28. Everytime I hear one of KO's commentaries, I am amazed at first...
and then fearful for him. I hope that he is able to fend off the inevitable onslaught - although with the way things are going latley, even the conservatives are fleeing that sinking ship. He absolutely could not have done this 1 1/2 years ago. I was watching a round table with Chris Matthews yesterday with several conservatives and it was amazing to hear them telling each other how they really didn't support the incursion into Iraq from the beginning and I was just incredulous. Tucker Carlson actually having the temerity to say he opposed it from the beginning - what a liar!

31. One very small problem with that. Because he's on MSNBC, it's
possible that his ratings can't gain all that much ground, all that dramatically. MSNBC is a pretty damned teeny outlet, and it's not aggressively promoted like the Pox "news" people promote their 24-hour cable dreck.

It might be worth an email to MSNBC or to "Countdown" or to Dan Abrams, or even to NBC News, to suggest they add Olbermann's commentaries (perhaps in slightly shorter form) to the "Nightly News with Brian Williams" - say every Friday, at the end of the newscast. Just something to think about. Back when I was working, it was called "cross-pollination," and it sure would draw more attention to Keith's work, and the fact that he speaks for SO many of us.

16. Same for his Freeper Critics
Freepers watching Keith are like kids with a plate of broccoli in front of them. They'll use words like icky, poopy or blah when they should just shut up and swallow what is good for them.

18. Where do the Republican clowns get off calling us names?
They don't know me; I'm a helluva lot more patriotic than any of those sore losers. I'd sue the whole
damned bunch if I had enough money. I don't like being called names by those fascists idiots.
That's the only thing they know; they don't have a clue about how to end their mess, so they start
calling names, and it has to stop.

You go Keith Olberman: Thanks for what you do. :loveya:

19. The fact that this is "news" itself, is shameful
When a president...any president...screws up this badly, it shouldbe in ALL the news venues...all the time..

Until this tenderfoot sheriff, it was the norm to criticize government.

That's what someone willingly accepts when they become president. They EXPECT their every move to be critiqued, and to be the object of scrutiny..

Little Mr 9-11 has wound himself so tightly in the flag, that I think he cut off the oxygen to his pea-brain.. He actually thinks that he is ABOVE reproach..

He's no Caesar's wife..:grr:

20. Good review, thank you
I only recently learned about Mr.Olbermann and was trying to explain who he is to someone and they wanted to know if he always ranted, how this would be different than the rw pundits rant, so this is a good article to share. Thank you.

29. Fun little bit of trivia I found in this link - the photo of Olbermann at
the TV Critics Association junkets this past summer - taken by one Reed Saxon at the AP. Reed Saxon's work is literally Pulitzer Prize-caliber work. Reed Saxon is the guy who took the photo of Bill Clinton wearing sunglasses and playing saxophone on the "Arsenio Hall Show" during the 1992 Presidential campaign. A package of photos from that campaign won the Associated Press a Pulitzer Prize. And, thrilling enough for me, I got to work one work-station over from Reed Saxon and Nick Ut (ANOTHER Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist - Nick Ut was the guy who took the photo of the screaming little girl running naked down a country road in Vietnam after being napalmed - that photo won him a Pulitzer, singlehandedly - not as a group of photos). And I should also tell you both Nick AND Reed and everybody else in the AP Photo Department were among the COOLEST, NICEST, most EASY-GOING, most HUMBLE (not an ego in the bunch), and MOST EXCELLENT news professionals with whom I ever had the pleasure of working.
