Lettuce Recalled Over E. Coli Concerns

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Less than a week after the Food and Drug Administration lifted its warning on fresh spinach grown in California's Salinas Valley, a popular brand of lettuce grown there has been recalled over concerns about E. coli contamination.

The lettuce does not appear to have caused any illnesses, Salinas-based Nunes Co. Inc. said in a statement.

The company initiated a voluntary recall Sunday of green leaf lettuce purchased last week under the Foxy brand name. Foxy is one of the nation's largest suppliers of lettuce, celery, broccoli, vegetable platters and stir-fry mixes.

The recall covered lettuce purchased in grocery stores Oct. 3-6 in Arizona, California, Nevada, Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Montana. It was also sold to distributors in those states who may have sold it to restaurants.

5. what's going on is that our addiction to meat

and factory farms is screwing us all. Nothing wrong with eating meat; we're omnivores even though I choose not to. But the current factory farms are horrible for us, the animals, and the environment. E. Coli comes from cow shit, if I am not mistaken, and most likely is in the water from fertilizers, run-off, etc.

I know that when I worked as a lifeguard we had to treat human poop like plutonium- and there are standards for clearing a pool and running the filters/backwash and dumping chlorine or somesuch for a certain amount of time if the poop is runny- Crypto and e.coli are the bad guys in public pool operation.

Migrant workers often LIVE in the orange groves..with their families.. they have no running water except for the spigots that water the trees, and when ya gotta go, ya gotta go.. irrigation "washes" all the waste right into the dirt..the same dirt that "nourishes" the plants we eat..

It's probably like that in many other "farm" operations..

I try to grow as much as I can in my garden which is urban...I had tomatos that are still ripening, my own basil, cabbage, and swiss chard...I wish I could grow everything I need myself but that would mean I have to leave the city. I am definitely (and have been for years) skeptical of the produce I buy. I stick to farmers markets and local growers.

i live in the city of melbourne. more closely related to the suburbs than the urban community. however, in a VERY small patch, I grow roma tomatoes, big bush tomatoes, okra, radishes, carrots, cayanne pepper, and georgia sweet onions. in various pots I have basil, rosemary, sage, and scallions. i used to have most of this in an apartment. remember, 5-gal buckets are your friends. drill a couple holes in the side and voila, instant planter. I had the okra, a beefsteak tomato, and the cayanne pepper in 5-gals, with everything else twindling according to necessary room.

We have over 1800 acres in the Pajaro and Salinas Valley. We grow lettuce, cauliflower, celery, broccoli and broccolini. My family grows artichokes...brought them over from Italy. I grew up in this area. Something about all of this recall BS isn't passing the smell test. We have NEVER had a problem like this and suddenly e-coli abounds? Instead of the FBI investigating all of the BS on Capitol Hill they raid spinach packers in CA.? I sense something is off here. Seriously.

29. My 6 yr old grand daughter (Tulare County) was diagnosed w/E.Coli-157

3 days ago. She first got sick a week ago Saturday, but the hospital ER sent her home twice saying it must be a 'flu' thing going around. Her pediatrician was skeptical enough that he sent a urine sample (nothing showed in the ER stool tests) to an outside lab & they found it. CDC has already been notified & are going to investigate - lab called them before they called the doc back. Hers is most likely cattle related, they moved to a dairy farm just 3 weeks ago. I had no idea how easily this could occur till now, but I'm sure learning ... fast! Cuts in water, dairy, meat-processing, sanitation, etc inspections seem to be some of the likely culprits for the staggering increases in occurrences. Some of that GOP tax-break cash would undoubtedly help to curb, at least, some of it.

They're running a kidney workup to see if function was impaired (at least she's finally peeing now - should be okay!) & testing her 10 yr old sis. Sissy is sick now, too. Her doc said today that one of his partners has a little boy that tested positive for it too, so it might be a school vector(?).

I read @ this stuff in LBN - it's a shock when it hits so close to home - I guess no one ever expects that.

It just seems like it's happening so much more frequently now. That's what I would like to see addressed by those in charge! Not likely, I know!

I have to do some taste testing at work but know the micro results.
I know that food is actually safer than it was decaded ago, but with these recalls along with some other issues, I think that might be the best course of action.
Cooking kills e coli and most other bacteria every time.

Is that it forces companies to reveal their brands. So many items now are copacked and sold under names that have no connection to the actual producer. A recall is bad enough. Entire exposure can be worse. These are good deterents.
