US to Step up Cuba Sanction and Enforcement
Edited on Wed Oct-11-06 08:26 AM by guajira
More sick behavior from the current Admin. One more reason we need to replace this bunch.

snippet
The government has created a task force dedicated to enforcing existing economic and trade sanctions against Cuba.

The Cuban Sanctions Enforcement Task Force is to investigate violations and enforce existing U.S. economic and trade sanctions against Cuba through federal criminal prosecutions.

Sanctions apply to all U.S. citizens and permanent residents wherever they are located, to all persons and organizations physically in the United States and to all branches and subsidiaries of U.S. organizations throughout the world.

1. By an odd coincidence
Every other october (even years only) an announcement is made regarding the imposition of tough new sanctions against the people and government of Cuba.

2. Hmmm...Pandering to Miami Exile Repukes??
Good observation, endarkenment.

Unfortunately Americans are not willing to fight for our freedom to travel to a peaceful Caribbean island just 90 miles away!

3. Ya think?
In all fairness the tradition of even year pandering to the cuban exiles has been a pretty much bipartisan affair going back to the '60s.

8. Undoubtedly right. It looks as if the reporter who wrote this story
has made the same connection:
U.S. forms task force to crack down on Cuba sanction violators
The Associated Press

Published: October 10, 2006

MIAMI The Bush administration announced the formation of a new law enforcement task force Tuesday that will aggressively pursue violations of trade and travel sanctions imposed by the U.S. on Cuba for more than four decades.

Miami-based U.S. Attorney R. Alexander Acosta said the task force will focus on prosecuting criminal violators of U.S. laws governing such things as prohibited commercial business with Cuba, currency reporting requirements, money laundering and illegal travel to the island.

The task force's formation comes as Cuba faces political uncertainty due to the illness of President Fidel Castro, who in July temporarily ceded power to his brother, Raul. And it also comes about a month before U.S. congressional elections where Cuban-American voters in South Florida — most of them fervently anti-Castro — form an important Republican Party constituency.
(snip)

But Kirby Jones, president of the Washington-based U.S.-Cuba Trade Association, said he's not aware of a growing problem of sanctions violations and suggested that election-year politics played a role in the announcement.

"There's so little that is allowed that I don't know where they think there is room to get tougher. What possibly can they do? It comes down to whether it's not more political posturing as it comes close to the election," said Jones, whose 55-company group advocates normalizing trade with Cuba.
(snip/...)

7. Such eager little beavers
If they knew for a fact the world was ending tomorrow, they'd still keep on trying to think up new ways to screw Cuba. It's called "breaking a butterfly on the wheel." Frankly, we should make all those right-wing Cubans swim back to Cuba. They're basically the sons and daughters of a corrupt, vicious fascist government who are still pissed that their ill-gotten gains were confiscated. Sore losermen for sure.
