President Bush to hold news conference
Effort comes amid N. Korea tensions , House scandal and a new Iraq study

WASHINGTON - Amid escalating tensions with North Korea over its claim of a succesful nuclear test, a persistent Congressional page scandal and controversial new study about violence in Iraq, President Bush will hold a news conference at 11 a.m. ET on Wednesday.

Weeks before midterm elections across the country, Bush and the Republican Party are facing dismal approval ratings and for the first time since 2001, a Newsweek poll shows that more Americans — 53 percent — trust Democrats or moral values and the war on terror.

The news conference will offer the first opportunity for reporters to ask Bush about North Korea’s reported nuclear test and Republican prospects in Nov. 7 congressional elections after a scandal involving a Republican congressman’s sexual messages to teen-aged aides.
