Kerry defends troop withdrawal proposal in Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS (AP) - U.S. Sen. John Kerry on Wednesday called the Bush administration's Iraq policy a "stand-still-and-lose strategy," and defended his proposal to set a deadline for troop withdrawal.

"Every time President Bush tells the Iraqis we will 'stay as long as it takes,' he is giving squabbling politicians there an excuse to take as long as they want," the Massachusetts senator said in a statement released while campaigning for Nevada candidates. "At each step along the way, the Iraqi leaders have responded only to deadlines."

Kerry was responding to comments Bush made earlier in the day in which the president described the senator's deadline proposal as a "cut and run" approach.

Bush said at a White House news conference, "when you pull out before the job is done, that's cut and run, as far as I'm concerned. And that's cut and run as far as most Americans are concerned."
