Anti-war vet group will march, after all
The Maine Veterans for Peace will march in a Veterans Day parade in Portland next month after attempts to keep them out caused an uproar.

Group president Doug Rawlings said Wednesday night he was told that American Legion Post 17 had backed off its earlier decision to keep MVP away.

It was good news for the peace group. But its members had been saying all along that they would march in the Portland parade Nov. 11 regardless.

"We're not budging from our stance," Rawlings said Wednesday. "We're entitled to march with our banner and our float."

1. But evidently no one can have any signs other than identifying signs.
So no 'peace signs' or any other signs allowed. The head of Legion Post 17 sounded like he'd been through hell and back over this on the radio last night.

6. Heh. That didn't take long.
As we predicted, the Andrews post caught hell over that decision.

2. The way this usually works .....

they agreed to let them participate in the parade to show how "open minded" they are. But of course the parade sponsors will have members and friends in the crowd along the parade route present to harrass the MVP's as they pass by just to make their point.

4. The only socially acceptable attitude toward war is . . .
Hell, yes!

If you're against war as a tool of foreign policy, if you're against war as a political ploy to pump life into sagging poll results, if you're against war as a colossal waste of time, lives, and money, if you're against war for any number of perfectly good and valid reasons, you're a kook in American society. You're a traitor or worse. You're a la-de-dah fantasist. You're an ivory-tower egghead who doesn't see how the world really works.

But put on the war goggles, and war becomes the answer for everything, it works every time (except those unfortunate, isolated incidents when it sort of doesn't, but that's only because we didn't wage war hard enough), it never costs anything, none of the truly good guys ever dies, and everything comes out just ducky in the end, and the end comes right quickly.

5. This is why I DON'T volunteer at the local VA Hospital
I would blow a gasket encountering idiots like the guys from American Legion Post 17.

Instead, I support the troops by donating to Operation Helmet, with the provision that my helmets not go to troops engaged in prisoner interrogation or detention.
