JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Navy should put a new aircraft carrier at the Mayport Naval Station once the USS John F. Kennedy is mothballed, Gov. Jeb Bush said, and suggested it should be one that's named for another president, one the governor knows well.

Bush was in Virginia earlier this month for the christening of the USS George H.W. Bush, a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier named after the 82-year-old former president - and father of the Florida governor.

The younger Bush said this week that he has made a case to the Navy that Mayport needs to remain a carrier port and that the ship with his family name on it would be nice to have.

"It makes all the sense in the world from the perspective of protecting the homeland and our national security that it would be housed here, berthed here," Bush said. "And it would be fantastic personally for me to have the George H.W. Bush at Mayport."
