Eaton Moves 130 Ohio Jobs To Mexico

CLEVELAND -- Industrial parts manufacturer Eaton Corp. plans close a hydraulics hose plant in northeast Ohio and move about 130 jobs to Mexico.

Eaton said it will close a plant in Mantua next year, moving 115 of its 193 jobs to a factory in nearby Aurora and the rest to Reynosa, Mexico. The Aurora plant, which now has 161 employees, will also lose 52 jobs to Mexico.

A plastics compounding plant in Aurora will not be affected by the consolidation, Eaton said Wednesday.

Eaton plans to offer the Ohio workers voluntary separation packages and will give severance packages to those who lose jobs.

I had friends who worked at Eaton in Marshall, MI. They have a plant near Climax MI as well. Don't know if there's anything left of either now.

...I may meet them some day. I travel to Marshall MI a lot for work, and when our customer was accepting applications earlier this year, people were lined up around the block... just to get a chance to make soup.

Ain't too many other jobs in Michigan these days. Poor guys...

3. I met a man at the market yesterday who said his wife lost her job

at Cleveland Clinic after nineteen years. Some other workers are assuming the duties of two jobs and elminating workers.

Giant Eagle is buying out Tops grocery stores eliminating jobs and CLOSING the warehouse that supplied the Tops stores. GE will be selling off the food in the stores and once the warehouse is emptied it will be closed. This is estimated to take about two weeks.

Besides the job loss this is devastating to this area (where I live) because we will now have NO COMPETITION with only one major food chain left. Food prices are so high now I shudder to think how much higher they will rise. This will also raise our property taxes to cover the loss of revenue from the warehouse......

C&S, a distributor for Tops Markets, reported Tuesday that it will close its warehouse and lay off 256 workers as of Dec. 8 because the supermarket chain agreed to sell 18 of its stores in the Cleveland area to competitor Giant Eagle Inc.

Ciaravino said Tops officials told him they also plan to cut more than 70 management jobs at the warehouse site.

C&S pays the city about $300,000 in income taxes annually - 2 percent of the city's $14 million budget, said Finance Director Michael Slocum.

Neither C&S nor Tops could be reached for comment Wednesday.

Slocum said the loss makes passage of a $1.6 million tax all the more important. The tax will appear on the Nov. 7 ballot as a 4-mill increase.

"If this levy doesn't pass, we're going to be in a position where we're going to have to cut spending by $1 million," he said. "It becomes a very tough call. You're going to have to cut services."

I also heard about Giant Eagle buying all of the Tops stores. Not good....no competition. I also heard from a few Tops workers that I know (union people) that their jobs will be eliminated and Giant Eagle is intending on turning many Tops stores (including theirs) into their "Get-go" gas stations.

on edit to add: Tops screwed themselves when they started injecting their meats with that salt, water and chemical combo. (So I'm told) Apparently, they thought that it was a good idea trying to make their meats last 2 weeks or so, but consumers didn't fall for it.

8. Everything you said is true. The job loss in the Giant Eagle stores

will be staggering. The new store on Transportation Boulevard in Garfield Heights eliminated packers - a job that was done by high school students and retired people who cannot make it on their retirement money. The cashiers must do their own packing. The store is gigantic BUT the stock is low on a lot of items and many items were eliminated soon after the well stocked store opened.

There are many brands and items that I have used for years and some of them were still stocked at Tops. Now that isn't an option.

The injected meat in a bag was not welcomed by the shoppers. Tops is/was owned by the Netherlands, Royal Dutch Ahold. Ahold came here and took over many locally or US owned stores. The first thing they did (and Giant Eagle did the same) was to raise all the prices to make the stores more "profitable." They cut wages by forcing union workers out and replaced them with low paid nonunion workers. They also thought they could force the shopper to buy their prepacked scary looking meat in a bag so they could eliminate butchers onsite. It was a bad mistake.

Instead of selling to GE, I wish a new buyer or buyers had been found. Our legislators should make laws against monopolies that hurt consumers. We need competition and now we have none in this area in grocers.

11. Just give it a few months. Wally World is opening in Bedford.

My councilman tells me this is going to be the largest WM store in the country, much much bigger than the new one in Garfield. He also tells me Giant Eagle is -not- doing well financially and he doesn't expect them to last much longer in our area.

Besides Tops and GE, we can watch Target and all other nearby discount stores wither and die as WM undercuts them in the race to the bottom.

12. That site was also home of Forest City - a store that I really miss.

That entire corner seems to be empty except for Kentucky Fried Chicken which never seems to have much business.

We are poor people in this area and we cannot support all these shopping centers and grocery stores. The Walmart in Garfield Heights is a disappointment. When I walk in the entrance I feel like I'm entering a prison or something. Why put another Walmart a few miles up Rockside Road? There was a SuperK that went out of business perhaps a mile from that corner of Northfield and Rockside. It is now a car dealership. Aren't these companies supposed to use demographics to determine if there is enough traffic flow to support their megastores?

Why is Giant Eagle not doing well financially? Could it be their decisions to close smaller well run stores to build giant stores that require more funds to light, heat and cool them?

I shopped at Reider's StopNShop on Broadway for over thirty years. I could always buy every item I needed weekly and for Holidays in that store. It was small but compact. It could have used some remodeling and painting but most shoppers were more concerned about keeping the prices reasonable. I would give anything to have that store reopen just as it was.

It still stands as a bad memory - a victim of the initial takeover by Giant Eagle in this area.

9. Giant Eagle is already so damned expensive. It'll be even more so now.

Tops was about the only major chain competitor they had in this region. This is a horrible deal for everyone but the fat cats sitting at the top of Giant Eagle, who just got fatter.

It would have been better if Krogers or some other outside chain had bought them out to enter the market, so that Giant Eagle would at least still have competition.

On the other hand, there's always those anti-union Wal-Mart Supercenters that are now popping up everywhere. But now, maybe Wal-Mart will start building their stand-alone Wal-Mart Supermarket stores to fill Tops' void. :eyes:
