LAT: Book: Bush Aides Called Evangelicals ‘Nuts’
Edited on Thu Oct-12-06 11:23 PM by RamboLiberal
http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/nation/la-na-faith13oct13,0,3875008.story?coll=la-home-headlines

A new book by a former White House official says President Bush's top political advisers privately ridiculed evangelical supporters as "nuts" and "goofy" while embracing them in public and using their votes to help win elections.

The former official also writes that the White House office of faith-based initiatives, which Bush promoted as a nonpolitical effort to support religious social service organizations, was told to host pre-election events designed to mobilize religious voters who would most likely favor Republican candidates.

The assertions by David Kuo, the former No. 2 official in the faith-based initiatives program, have rattled Republican strategists already struggling to convince evangelical voters to turn out this fall for the GOP.

Some conservatives lamented Thursday that the book, "Tempting Faith: An Inside Story of Political Seduction," also comes in the midst of the scandal involving former Rep. Mark Foley's interest in male congressional pages, another threat to conservative turnout in competitive House and Senate races.

<snip>

"Here we go again," said Paul M. Weyrich, a leading religious conservative with close ties to the White House, referring to the avalanche of negative factors that he predicted would keep "embarrassed Republicans" from voting, just as the Watergate scandal did in the 1970s. "If Republicans win, it will prove God is a Republican, since it will take a miracle."

Or Satan works for Diebold.

Article confirms Kuo will be on 60 Minutes Sunday.

2. the article mentions Olbermann
Kuo is scheduled to appear Sunday on CBS' 60 Minutes program as part of a rollout arranged by his publisher, Simon & Schuster, which shares a corporate parent with CBS. Despite a publisher-enforced embargo, a copy of the book was purchased early at a Manhattan bookstore by a producer for MSNBC's "Countdown," a spokesman for the cable channel said. Program host Keith Olbermann began reading excerpts on his Wednesday show.

3. KO is really driving the sales of the book
#13 Amazon, #48 B&N. Another night of KO and 60 Minutes Sunday - I'm betting Top 5.

4. I wish Kuo would go on KO
His presence on the show would add SO much more to the reports. The guy (Kuo) IS an archconservative, so I hope he's not avoiding KO for political reasons.

5. He can't appear on a show until after 60 MInutes Sunday
He's published by Simon & Schuster - same kind of deal they did with Woodward - 60 Minutes gets first shot and book debuts next day. Except like the NYT and NYDN did to Woodward, KO did to Kuo, he got his hot hands on the book before release date cause a bookstore sold it retail. With Woodward buzz was so high that Simon & Schuster let the bookstores roll out the book the day before 60 Minutes.

I expect he will be all over the TV next week. In fact a list a DU'er posted had him scheduled for Faux on Monday - didn't say which show.

7. Thanks for the clarification.
I've been watching these KO reports and wondering aloud "why don't you just book the guy?!"

I'm sure he'll be on Countdown as soon as his book contract allows.

8. too late for some...
some of the right wingers I know are so deeply mesmerized that given the choice, they would choose to sacrifice Jesus on the cross again rather than believe the bush team did anything wrong. Nothing can be said to these individuals to wake them up, the bush white house has become the true word of GOD to them. Hopefully some of the more resonable ones will wake up to the smell of reality.it's sad, they are good people and have good intentions, just misguided by the false god in the white house.
