NYT: Democrats Try to Regain Ground on Moral Issues
When Representative Richard A. Gephardt accused President Bush this week of condoning a culture of corporate greed, he cast his criticism in distinctly moral tones. "We've lost ethics," he told voters at a pizzeria in Independence, Iowa. "We've lost a sense of right and wrong."

One day later, Gen. Wesley K. Clark told Democrats at a crowded synagogue in Florida that he would never allow Republicans to claim a monopoly on faith.

And all week long in New Hampshire, Senator Joseph I. Lieberman of Connecticut cast an array of policy proposals, like expanded access to health insurance and child care, as proof of his dedication to family values. "It's a basic commitment," he said, "a moral commitment that we should make to all of our families."

While much of the presidential campaign so far has focused on the economy or the war in Iraq, a different refrain is being heard from many quarters as Democratic candidates seek to distinguish themselves by discussing values and also try to reclaim ground increasingly dominated by the Republican Party over the last decade.

2. Because they have the bullhorn + Christian Right
It's up to us - grassroots to counteract this. (Ex: Christmas spirit: for the second year in a row, the GOP congress votes to not extend unemployment benefits before the hollyday, while trying to make the tax cut for the rich permanent. It's up to us to make it known...

6. Re: Christmas spirit
Last year I could hardly contain my anger at the hypocrisy of "Peace on Earth" while our leaders were chomping at the bit to start a war that didn't need to happen. I had to practically go into seclusion. My husband and shared my feelings. We spent Christmas by ourselves and tried to find meaning in the day by signing “Let There be Peace on Earth, and Let it Begin With Me.”

14. Democrats s/b proud of being "Liberals Like Christ"
We've been trying to tell Democrats for 6 years that they have a thousand times more justification to claim the moral high ground and the mantle of Jesus Christ than do the leaders of the Greedy Old Party, but they haven't wanted such advantages.

See http://www.LiberalsLikeChrist.Org/Democrats .

See what Christ might say about the "Christian Coalition" & "Religious Right" imposters.

4. correct approach
never let the other guy get you on the ropes -- gephardt was right on with his comments -- and clark came in a close second with his.
now -- if someone will be courageous enought to open a battle front with the religous right wing wackos directly -- i'll be thrilled.

7. Favorite bumpersticker:
Does Jesus want you to kill his children?
Or something to that effect.

I don't get it.

I don't get it.

I don't get it.

I don't get it.

How can murders claim the moral highground?

8. This is right on target
Bush is most vulnerable at the point he seems so impregnable: this false armor they call his moral character.

11. They have no morals
They lie, cheat and steal ... and get away with it. Why? They control the media. For example the Boeing tanker lease deal is manifestly corrupt. But will anybody ask why Bush was trying so hard to push it through Congress? No. The Repugs would kill you for a nickle yet it is claim that we have lost "morality." Excuse me while I throw up.

15. It is utter hypocrisy to send a card or have a sign on your
house that says Peace On Earth, Good Will Towards Man and support killing and endorse phoney and profitable war where a few prosper and our young are dismembered and sent to their death. Defense against impending invasion after all peace talks fail, yes. Concocted wars that benefit a few businessmen-politicians and for testing new weapon-toys and war strategies and bomb targeting machinery is a horror, no.

To believe all that BS and turn around and wish someone Peace On Earth is the height of hypocrisy.

If religion condones this hypocrisy, we are on the wrong path.

Yes, Democrats and Independents need to take a stand.
