Missing University of Vermont student found dead
URLINGTON, Vt. -- Police said this afternoon that the body of a missing University of Vermont student has apparently been found in a nearby gorge.

Police said that a body tentatively identified as Michelle Gardner-Quinn, a 21-year-old senior, was found near Huntington Gorge, a popular swimming spot in Richmond, a bedroom community about 15 miles from Burlington. Police said she was apparently murdered.

She had been missing since about 2:30 a.m. Saturday, when a security camera on Main Street captured her walking toward her dormitory with a man that police identified as Brian Rooney, 36, and described yesterday as a suspect in her disappearance and death.

Rooney is in custody and has been charged with sexual assault charges in a separate case, police said.

1. I hope he's no relation to Mickey Rooney.
Mickey doesn't need that.

Sad story. Poor girl.

6. Seriously -- was the comment necessary?
It appears she was raped and murdered. I see nothing wrong with this being reported. I wish ALL the girls and women this happens to was reported daily. The rape, torture, and murder of females in this country (and the world) is sickening.

Please do not mock this young woman's death as a media distraction.

Parents need to start having some serious talks with their teens.. Somewhere about 15, kids get the invincibility idea, and a lot of them seem to forget about personal safety..

I am NOT "blaming" the victim here, but young people of either sex should never be alone..outside in the wee hours of the morning..

and kids should always be ready to call a cab

and the should make sure their own cell phone is working whenever they go out

and when and if alcohol is being consumed, they should be forewarned about diminished capacity and should stay where they are and sleep it off..

(my best friend's son died because they decided to "go home"..he was drunk, rode with a drunk driver, and ended up dead in a car crash....)

7. I've had that talk
with my stepdaughter. I title it "men are scum, i would know, i am one".

She knows the following:

alcohol & drugs are fun, but the cops will ruin your life, so call us whatever time it is.
when you're home by yourself, the door is locked.
if your BF ever hits you or threatens you, its over. period.
if you don't break it off, when i find out, you are dead.

i had her mom tell her about the sex stuff, as in, you get yours too, or its over.

my daughter's father had the same conversation with our daughter's, to include the same opening line! Great minds think alike! We started having those conversations when they turned teenagers. That along with some self-defense moves, made me and their dad a little more at ease but you never know. Maybe this young girl's parents had the same conversations, who knows. What a tragic, tragic loss. My heart goes out to her family.

8. This makes me so sad.
I always think of my state as a safe haven. I never lock my house or car. This terrible murder, along with the shootings a few weeks ago at a school, shatter that illusion.
