Gallaudet Students Arrested
Gallaudet Students Arrested
President Ordered Halt To 3-Day Demonstration
By Susan Kinzie, Michael E. Ruane and Nelson Hernandez
Washington Post Staff Writers
Saturday, October 14, 2006; Page B01

The president of Gallaudet University told protesting students last night that they had to end the three-day demonstration that has shut down the elite college for the deaf or face arrest.

The ultimatum by longtime leader I. King Jordan was delivered to protesters at the school's main entrance on Florida Avenue NE about 7 p.m. It further raised tensions that have been building at the school for almost a week and smoldering since May, when students began protesting the appointment of incoming president Jane K. Fernandes.

Student protesters at Gallaudet University have brought the campus to a standstill for a third day. The protesters oppose the appointment of incoming president Jane K. Fernandes.

12. They protest a lot there. High spirited group, I guess
They got bagged several years back for trashing a cemetery, knocking over headstones, IIRC...

2. wow, a student protest is actually making a difference
That's encouraging. Students across the country have a lot of things they should be protesting; maybe this will help to motivate others.

3. Think back about ten to fifteen years ago... Gallaudet students are
the ones who got Jordon appointed as President of the school when a hearing person was originally appointed. The students protested vehemently and eventually, the board of governors (or whoever runs the school) agreed to appoint a deaf president.

I. King Jordon was not born deaf but lost his hearing as an adult.

I'm sure that these students, if they don't personally remember, have been told about that and plan to have the results they want this time too.

4. How has it made a difference?
Its getting some publicity, but there seems to be no change in the stance of the administration.

5. admittedly, my standards are pretty low
But to get a story in a major national paper and to have the alumni association issue a statement of support are two things that have never happened in any of the campus activism I've been involved in.

7. I am picturing a guy standing in front of a crowd
using sign language and getting the crowd to reply in sign language. It's a neat picture.

11. I didn't mean it to be offensive...
it was only meant to be mildly (and admittedly stupidly) humorous.
