A Chicoan's plan to involve grandmothers in a peace protest won the endorsement of the Chico Area Interfaith Council this week.
Cathy Webster, who has four grandchildren herself, said she was happy to get the council's endorsement.

Webster, a local peace activist, got the idea to recruit grandmothers for a demonstration when she attended the funeral last fall of Helen Kinnee, 91, who was involved in peace work in Chico for many years.

At the memorial service, someone sang Holly Near's song "A Thousand Grandmothers." The lyrics include these words: "Send in a thousand grandmothers, They will surely volunteer, With their ancient wisdom flowing, They will lend a loving ear."

Inspired by the song, Webster said she got the idea to try to recruit 1,000 grandmothers to join the annual "School of the Americas" demonstration in Georgia.

1. It was the granmas that made up the leadership councils
In various Eastern seaboard Indian nations. (Before the White man cometh)

The tribes would vote on their favorite ten or twelve granmas, and those ladies would decide on the policies for the tribe as a whole
