Rep. Jefferson loses party endorsement
The Louisiana Democratic Party turned down eight-term U.S. Rep. William Jefferson (news, bio, voting record) on Saturday and endorsed state Rep. Karen Carter, one of a dozen challengers who emerged after Jefferson became the target of a federal bribery investigation.

The State Central Committee's 69-53 vote, at a special meeting to decide whom to endorse in Louisiana's open primaries Nov. 7, was the first time in recent memory that an incumbent had failed to win the state party's endorsement.

7. Yes.
It was political payback for Jefferson endorsing Nagin in the Mayoral race.

Nagin also has a duty really to support the incumbent right now, because the city needs help from its representatives, so we have to kiss Landrieu, Jefferson, Blanco and Bush butt, even though they ALL suck.

Just a political reality. Nagin is very anti-corruption though and has made City Hall much more transparent.

12. Nagin was also a Republican. Just became a Democrat.
I imagine people change parties for different reasons, and I suspect Nagin changed his because he was running for a position in a predominately Democratic area. He has far too many quirks that appear Republican, but it's hard to criticize him because of the very difficult task that fate put in his hands.

5. The Green Papers explains
Louisiana is unique among the States of the American Union because it holds a so-called "Open Primary" , in which all candidates for a given office run "all up", that is together- regardless of political party- on a single ballot and, therefore, on a theoretically non-partisan basis : where a candidate wins a majority of the votes in this "Open Primary", he or she is "declared elected"; if not, the top two vote-getters among all the candidates "run off" in a subsequent election-snip-

Go to the link above, there are many Democrats running for this seat.

8. Good
It will hopefully take some teeth out of Republicans trying to claim Democrats are corrupt too and use Jefferson as an example.

yeah, the difference is, when one of our members is caught red handed, we say t them "thanks, but no." We don't cover it up or try to say how they didn't do it - or try to distract by pointing out what everyone else is doing wrong.

9. People for years used the freezer to hide stuff until
it became so popular. Lots of drugs hidden there also. Jefferson definitely has some legal problems but $$ in freezer has been common. Only problem his money matched some possible illegal activities. We have kept extra $$ in some weird places and it was legit!
