Cheney says did not refer to water boarding

WASHINGTON, Oct 27 (Reuters) - Vice President Dick Cheney said on Friday he was not referring to "water boarding" or any interrogation technique in a radio interview, after critics accused him of endorsing simulated drowning by agreeing that a "dunk in water" for terrorism suspects might be useful.

...

Returning from a day trip to Missouri and South Carolina on Friday, Cheney told reporters on board his plane no one used the term "water boarding" in the radio interview and he had not been discussing any specific technique.

"I don't talk about techniques. I wouldn't. I have said that the interrogation program for a select number of detainees is very important. It has been I think one of the most valuable intelligence programs that we have," Cheney said. "I believe it has allowed us to prevent terrorist attacks against the United States. I did not talk about specific techniques and won't."

He added: "I didn't say anything about water boarding, those were all his (radio host) comments. He didn't even use that phrase."

5. Maybe he meant throwing people out of helicopters into the ocean.

NEW RIPPLES IN AN EVIL STORY, 7/01
by Sister Laetitia Bordes, s.h.

... In 1994, the Honduran Rights Commission outlined the torture and disappearance of at least 184 political opponents.

It also specifically accused John Negroponte of a number of human rights violations. Yet, back in his office that day in 1982, John Negroponte assured us that he had no idea what had happened to the women we were looking for. I had to wait 13 years to find out. In an interview with the Baltimore Sun in1996 Jack Binns, Negroponte's predecessor as US ambassador in Honduras, told how a group of Salvadorans, among whom were the women we had been looking for, were captured on April 22, 1981 and savagely tortured by the DNI, the Honduran Secret Police, before being placed in helicopters of the Salvadoran military. After take off from the airport in Tegucigalpa, the victims were thrown out of the helicopters. Binns told the Baltimore Sun that the North American authorities were well aware of what had happened and that it was a grave violation of human rights. But it was seen as part of Ronald Reagan's counterinsurgency policy ...

20. Thanks for posting this important information on the ghoulish freak, Negroponte.
Flinging prisoners out of helicopters and airplanes has been a big favorite I found out in the last few years in various searches, from Viet Nam, forward through Chile, Argentina, Central America, etc.

Not many things can be done to victems uglier than this profoundly evil act.

The truth needs to be known now, and not decades after the perps have died.

24. Maybe he meant boiling people alive, as in Uzbekistan
Independent human rights groups estimate that there are more than 600 politically motivated arrests a year in Uzbekistan, and 6,500 political prisoners, some tortured to death. According to a forensic report commissioned by the British embassy, in August two prisoners were even boiled to death.

The US condemned this repression for many years. But since September 11 rewrote America's strategic interests in central Asia, the government of President Islam Karimov has become Washington's new best friend in the region.

12. This is absurd! That contemptible POS
most certainly was talking about water boarding. Dunking in water? What kind of "dunking in water" would be designed to elicit information that someone wasn't willing to give up to begin with?

Cheney is pond scum! My apologies to pond scum everywhere.

14. I'll admit, I only know this story second hand but what I know is
that he did an interview with some radio host in Fargo who brought the subject up. Apparently Cheney was okay with it according to the interview. The only reason anyone outside of Fargo even knows about this is because Randi Rhodes was rooting about Cheney's White House website and the interview was listed there. She clicked on it and I guess the rest is history. But I think other people since have heard or read the interview.

Anyone who reads the interview knows that fact, cheney.

Q I've heard from a lot of listeners -- that's what we do for a living, talk to good folks in the Heartland every day -- and I've talked to as many who want an increased military presence in Iraq as want us out, which seems to be the larger debate, at least coming from the left -- cut and run, get out of there. One fax said, when you talk to the Vice President, ask him when shock and awe is coming back to Iraq. Let's finish the job once and for all.

And terrorist interrogations and that debate is another example. And I've had people call and say, please, let the Vice President know that if it takes dunking a terrorist in water, we're all for it, if it saves American lives. Again, this debate seems a little silly given the threat we face, would you agree?

THE VICE PRESIDENT: I do agree. And I think the terrorist threat, for example, with respect to our ability to interrogate high value detainees like Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, that's been a very important tool that we've had to be able to secure the nation. Khalid Sheikh Mohammed provided us with enormously valuable information about how many there are, about how they plan, what their training processes are and so forth, we've learned a lot. We need to be able to continue that.

Khalid Sheikh Mohammed was waterboarded on the orders of the President of the United States of America.

Yes, cheney, you certainly were referring to waterboarding. Torture.

That's what America now stands for; TORTURE. The Founding Fathers would be so pleased. Not.

25. I saw/heard the entire "interview" - there was nothing else he could have been referreing to except
that TORTURE practice.

The whole interview was about waterboarding. All comments that enshewed from it were about how CHENEY and bunkerboy and the REPUKES KNEW about and condoned and PRACTICED and are CONTINUING TO PRACTICE torture.

There was no other conclusion to draw from that interview...
