LAT: GOP at a loss? Karl Rove has an 11th-hour plan to win
GOP at a loss? Karl Rove has an 11th-hour plan to win
The top strategist is in rare form for the midterm endgame.
By Tom Hamburger and Peter Wallsten, Times Staff Writers
October 28, 2006

....Rove is giving a virtuoso performance designed to prevent the Democrats from taking control of the House and Senate or, if that is no longer possible, to hold down the size of the Democratic victory to make it easier for the GOP to come back in 2008. His plan is three-pronged: to re-energize any conservatives who may be flagging; to make sure the GOP's carefully constructed campaign apparatus is functioning at peak efficiency; and to put the resources of the federal government to use for political gain....

***

This week, Rove and his staff...will oversee an exodus of political employees from Cabinet agencies, Capitol Hill and lobbying firms — many of them skilled campaign veterans — to more than a dozen battleground states. Many will act as "marshals," supervising the "72-hour plan" developed by Rove in 2001 with Ken Mehlman, the former White House political director who now heads the Republican National Committee....

***

Last summer, they invited hundreds of political appointees from Cabinet agencies, along with other GOP activists and Hill staffers, to attend a pep rally in Washington. The event featured appeals to politically experienced federal appointees to volunteer for campaign work in battleground races in the final two weeks of the campaign....

***

Interior Department employees describe regular visits from Rove's staff during Bush's first term. On one occasion, Rove visited a retreat for the 50 top Interior Department managers. The lights dimmed in an agency conference room as Rove went through a PowerPoint presentation showing battleground races in the 2002 midterm election, and occasionally made oblique but clearly understood references to Interior Department decisions that could affect these races.

By stopping short of explicitly calling on the Interior Department officials to take action, Rove stayed within the rules against exerting improper political influence....As the White House official considered closest to the president, Rove — along with his staff — not only influences government decisions and the travel schedules of GOP officeholders, but organizes leaders of private-sector groups who are investing heavily in the election....

are the flagrant violations of the Hatch Act being committed by Karl Rove, basically running the RNC out of the West Wing of the White House, all while drawing a government salary,.

Only regular civil service. When I was in the civil service I could not even donate to any campaign much less work for one. I have always questioned the constitutionality of this denial of rights.

Edited on Sun Oct-29-06 05:58 PM by Penndems
Copiers, desks, telephones, fax machines, Blackberries, Palm Pilots, office space, office supplies, chairs - whatever - to run a political campaign, it's illegal, irregardless of whether or not they're political appointees or regular Civil Service. That's one of the main reasons Jim Baker and his slavishly devoted group of minions got busted back in '92.

Those people were crooks, but they were rookies compared to the current Administration.

9. LAT: GOP at a loss? Karl Rove has an 11th-hour plan to win
Edited on Sun Oct-29-06 01:45 AM by RamboLiberal
http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/nation/la-na-rove29oct29,0,440699.story?coll=la-home-headlines

During a whirlwind five-hour trip to bolster an endangered GOP congressman's reelection prospects, White House political guru Karl Rove last week delivered a fiery speech to 500 party activists, then shook every available hand and posed for snapshots like a rock star. He toured suburbs recently trashed by a snowstorm. He also found time to huddle with local strategists.

But the most significant element of Rove's effort to help four-term Rep. Thomas M. Reynolds keep his job may have occurred behind closed doors, when the White House strategist met with a federal disaster relief official contemplating how to respond to the storm. Four days after the meeting, Reynolds announced that President Bush would authorize millions of dollars in federal disaster aid for the area.

The timing was perfect: Reynolds broke the news hours after testifying before the House Ethics Committee about his role in the Mark Foley sex scandal — knocking reports on the scandal out of the spotlight.

Reynolds' fate Nov. 7 could be a bellwether for Republicans in the Northeast — in the midterm elections as well as the long term. And his poll numbers crashed after revelations that he had known about suspicious e-mails the former Florida congressman had sent to male congressional pages. In the wake of the announcement about federal aid, a survey by a Buffalo television station showed Reynolds regaining a narrow lead over Democrat Jack Davis.

<snip>

Instead, Rove is giving a virtuoso performance designed to prevent the Democrats from taking control of the House and Senate or, if that is no longer possible, to hold down the size of the Democratic victory to make it easier for the GOP to come back in 2008. His plan is three-pronged: to re-energize any conservatives who may be flagging; to make sure the GOP's carefully constructed campaign apparatus is functioning at peak efficiency; and to put the resources of the federal government to use for political gain.

I think rove will find many more deaf ears for his propaganda this time around. I'm gaurded. I'm trying not to get my hopes up. But I sense a momentum, especially after watching the Ford/Corker debate, that is building. rove doesn't scare me like he used to. bush's traveling around to different states to campaign ain't what it was in 02. I don't think their gotv will be either.

7. The media is writing a lot of pro-dem stories these days
That's interesting to me. That will help the Dems a lot. Iraq has gone bad and the GOP can't cover it up anymore. I think Rove is a genius as he has a real talent for picking issues that fire up his base, issues that have little or nothing to do with the real problems in this country. I suspect it may not work this time.

KR's so-called genius is that he has no moral principles. He's willing to go lower than most of us are willing to go. It doesn't take brains as much as antisocial personality disorder, which is a genuine psychiatric diagnosis. I think everyone in the upper eschelon of the administration has it.

What is true of the individual will be tomorrow true of the whole nation if individuals will but refuse to lose heart and hope.

reinforce a plausible meme to cover election theft.

As others have sad, Rove's "genius" is he is willing to sink lower than most humans will go, and he has found a super-rich family willing to fund, and sink with, him.

And everyone knows if you wanna know which way the wind is blowing, you follow the money. Now, maybe BB's are just covering all the bases, but if CEO's believe there are Dem bases to cover, that means the worm has turned.

I live in the area that was hardest hit. I was 10 days without power. The problem wasn't the snow, it was the trees. The weight of that snow brought down numerous tree limbs with the leaves still on them. The cleanup was massive, well beyond any of our local governments. The storm was October 12-13, they just cleared the branches from in front of my house yesterday. We can handle snow in Buffalo, we just can't handle trees & snow clogging the streets.

That storm was a gift from God for Reynolds. His poll numbers started heading upward once that storm hit. Of course, there were so many people without power and phones, I'm wondering who they called.

25. The thing to be careful of
is that they don't use Saddam's verdict on Nov 5th in the same way they used Osama's video in Nov' 04...i.e. as an excuse that voters changed their minds at the last minute because they believed the Repubs were stronger on security...

If the Democrats have any sense they will have something lined up to counteract that or even distract from it.

43. Looks like Saddam's verdict may be delayed
Saddam verdict could be delayed for some days

http://www.alertnet.org/thenews/newsdesk/IBO946224.htm

BAGHDAD, Oct 29 (Reuters) - A court trying Saddam Hussein for the killing of Shi'ites in the 1980s could delay delivering a verdict, due next Sunday, for a few days to give judges more time to review testimonies, the chief prosecutor said on Sunday.

Jaafar al-Moussawi said the U.S.-backed Iraqi High Tribunal was still working on the judgement, which could send the ousted leader to the gallows if he is found guilty of crimes against humanity over his role in the killing of 148 villagers.

"We will know a day or two before the trial if they are ready to announce the verdict," he told Reuters.

Delaying the sentence, which was originally due for Nov. 5, could be a disappointment for U.S. President George W. Bush and his Republican Party.

Polls suggest Republicans could lose control of Congress in elections on Nov. 7 and a guilty verdict against Saddam could be used by Bush and his allies as a vindication of their policy to overthrow him.

Then there's this...might have scared them off from trying to use a Saddam verdict, but I doubt it. Would the verdict include the penalty?

Saddam Hussein's chief lawyer warns of more violence in Iraq if ex-president sentenced to death

http://www.iht.com/articles/ap/2006/10/29/africa/ME_GEN_Iraq_Saddam_Trial.php

AMMAN, Jordan Saddam Hussein's chief lawyer warned Sunday of worsening violence in Iraq and chaos through the Mideast if the ex-president was sentenced to death in his trial on charges of crimes against humanity because of an anti-Shiite crackdown in the 1980s.

Khalil al-Dulaimi also said he would attend Saddam's resumed hearings Monday on separate charges of genocide against the Kurds, breaking a monthlong boycott of the trial.

Al-Dulaimi told The Associated Press in Jordan that he warned of a civil war in a letter sent recently to U.S. President George W. Bush.

"I warned him against the death penalty and against any other decision that would inflame a civil war in Iraq and send fire throughout the region," al-Dulaimi he said in a telephone interview from Baghdad. He did not say when exactly and how he sent the letter to Bush.

"Any foolish American decision will further complicate things and will pose a serious threat to U.S. interests in the region," he said.

Al-Dulaimi also claimed that the offices of Saddam's defense team in the U.S.-controlled Green Zone of Baghdad were ransacked over a week ago, and that more than 1,400 pages of the trial documents were damaged.

52. Yes, but you haven't applied any turd polish to the idea, and there's
that percentage of his rabid base that still believes Saddam was connected to 9/11...it's the base they are trying to fire up to get to the polls. The ones that have become disenchanted since the Foley business came out and were planning to sit this one out. Add a Saddam verdict with some fresh turd polish to the gay marriage referendums that are on a lot of ballots and you might just coax them to the back to the polls.

The whole thing is diverting tax money to political campaigns...You know, like they yelled about Lincoln bedroom and Gore's e-mails...Glad that LA times is so awed and decided that as long as it's not "explicitly" it's legal...Sheesh!

53. Whether it is legal or not is not for the LAT to decide. Funny how in
a time where journalists gereally act as stenographers they have now jumped to a new profession of being the judge. Time for a letter writing campaign to the Times.

And regardless of the legalities, clearly it is of questionable ethicality. The Dems should shout about this story just to show what the WH is doing. I don't think the public would like it too much. And they should add the fact of that "disaster meeting" and that the WH had a tea party for the hate-monger RW radio hosts.

58. Whatever Rove's plan is, it sure doesn't include spending any $ on
phone calls to constituents in SoCal. I am registered (R) to decrease the chance of "mysterious" voting problems, and about two weeks ago the political phone calls from Republicans stopped COLD. Maybe they have given up here and are focusing elsewhere, where they have a slightly better chance? I am in a secure (D) district.

74. This is absolutely a must-read piece
As usual, The L.A. Times did its homework and published a thorough, investigative piece.

Absolutely this is illegal. In fact, about a month before the 1992 Presidential election, the FBI was investigating the Bush 41 White House for doing exactly what Rove has been up to for the past two election cycles.

A little Clinton White House insider story:

When Bill Clinton was taking the Presidential Oath of Office at precisely noon on January 20, 1993, two of his staff members walked through the Pennsylvania Avenue entrance of The White House. Their job was to make sure that the moving van arrived on time, and that everything was up and running, ready for the staff to come in and "hit the ground running", so to speak.

When they went into the various offices both inside the Immediate Office of the President and the Eisenhower Old Executive Office Building, they were absolutely dumbstruck to find that there were only monitors and keyboards on the desks. Was it a prank from the outgoing Bush Administration? Nope: The FBI had confiscated every single hard drive as evidence.

I know this story is true, because it was related to me by one of those two people.

85. Exactly and, as you probably remember, the Bush-Quayle '92 campaign pulled every
dirty stunt they could think of to derail Clinton-Gore.

Remember that raid on the National Records Center that was orchestrated by Elizabeth Tamposi, the then-Assistant Secretary of State for Consular Affairs? They went in and pulled the passport files for former President Clinton, his mother and Ross Perot.

The law means absolutely nothing to those people, and they'll stoop to whatever measures, legal or otherwise, it takes for them to win.

71. You probably won't get a copy of his "PLAN" but....

...I'm sure that from past experience, you could make an educated guess about what he is capable of doing, in the "72 hours" leading up to election-day. You already know WHAT&WHEN he wants to do...turn democrat voters into republican voters.....

Instead of being outraged you should be focused on HOW, not to mention WHERE and how to prevent it from happening.

If voting Americans are so fickle as to have their values change from the last poll to the voting booth, surely they can be flipped right back to Democrat, maybe even using the same 'tools'.

Since you already know the 'mainstream media' is bought and paid for, keep in mind there is still lots of sign space available....please get your message out!!

Watch out for the major surprise. It is coming this week... potentially Wednesday. Either Bin Laden or Zawahiri... Rove is a master when it comes to these things.... The chips weren't down enough in 04 to show their hand but this time is different if they can swing a small bit of momentum their way they can possibly hold the Congress.... Rove senses this and the gloves will be off this week... Stand By all..

81. There's a part of me that thinks the media are setting Dems up.
There's no doubt in my mind that the Democrats will gain seats after the November elections, it's a question of how many.

But the Republicans and their media stooges are dictating the dialogue to make it seem that anything less than the Dems taking over the House AND Senate is a loss to the Dems.

Take what you can get Democrats. If it means taking over the House, but not the Senate, take it. If the Dems take both houses, then great. If the Dems get neither, then work harder for 2008, at least you gained on the Republicans.

89. Blow the Cover off the GOP GOTV Myth
Edited on Mon Oct-30-06 03:08 AM by pat_k
They are one trick ponies.

"The plan" as always is to steal as much as they can in as many places as they can.

As folks here have been reporting, they have once again successfully purged registered voters, created registration forms with confusing and redundant checkboxes (and failed to notify voters when their registrations were deemed "invalid"). . . on and on.

Due to efforts of folks across the nation the problem with secret and corruptable vote counters (i.e., DREs) are finally being recognized. There have been many "saves," but the fascist minions are busy, busy, bees.

The machines are just one danger of many. You can't count (or miscount) votes that are never cast. (They will be barring voters from voting, there will be poll tax lines. . .)

Whatever they do, they can't pull off the theft without a COVER STORY.

The mythical GOP GOTV effort is that COVER STORY.

And we need to figure out ways to blow the Cover Off It.

Perhaps push reporters (such as they are) at Cable, Network, and Print news outlets to get out there and witness/investigate the mythical GOTV effort. Would like to ID specific people to pressure -- a couple at each network, nytimes, wapo, latimes. . .

Thoughts?
