China saving too much money: Bush
US President George W. Bush said today that he hoped China would transform from a country where people "hoard the money they have" into one where people buy large amounts of US products.

In an interview with conservative radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh, Mr Bush said China should become "a society in which there's consumers. Because now they're a society of too many savers".

"If we can encourage China to become a country of consumers, you can imagine what it would mean for US producers and manufacturers to have access to that market," he said.

2. Why would people in China pay more for American goods?
Very few things are made in America now, anyway. Why would you drive across town to go to the fish market when you have a well stocked pond in your backyard?

China is a country of rabid consumers and consumerism. They are also a NET IMPORTERS. The fact that they don't import much from the US says more about Bush's trade policies (and promotion of US industry and trade) than it does about China's consuer habits.

That's what it's about.

A pity, they get far greater profits out of Americans despit paying us more. If gas is 60 cents/gallon in China and $2.25 here, the same number of drivers in both countries... the math is simple; they'd get bigger profits out of Americans.

25. According to Dick Devos (R-China)....
He only opened an Amway plant in China because they will only allow goods made in China to be sold there. Of course, that doesn't explain why he laid off 1000 Michigan workers at the same time he opened the plant in China, but, hey, what can you expect from a guy who's never had to put in an honest day's work in his entire life?

I don't understand why conservative republicans love to invest in China, a country that is known for persecuting christians (and those of any religious faith). I don't want to make money off of China, I consider it blood money, personally.

32. Made in China means that the product will
be defective, like those lamps that were catching on fire, or those toasters that are unusable because the knobs fall off or the elements burn out.... Also means that those products are made with slave labor so US companies can lower their costs and lay off US workers. Unfettered capitalists are just as bad as communists.

55. Bush responding to the following????

From the Nov 30 World Media Watch at Buzzflash.com

5//China Daily, China-RESERVES SET TO SURPASS US$1 TRILLION
http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/china/2006-10/30/content_719410.htm

China's foreign exchange reserves look set to hit the US$1 trillion mark at the end of this month or beginning of November. But as the figure rises, so does the debate over how to best manage it. The reserves, already the world's biggest, surged to US$987.9 billion at the end of September, largely driven by a burgeoning foreign trade surplus and massive inflow of foreign direct investment (FDI). "How to manage such a huge reserve is a big challenge," said Yi Xianrong, a research fellow at the Institute of Finance Research under the Chinese Academy of Social Science. "The crux of the problem is that you have to keep the value stable or increasing," Yi said. The ballooning foreign reserves, many economist say, is a major reason behind the loose money supply. This is because the central bank has to issue additional money to mop up the excess US dollars in the market, resulting in excessive liquidity in the banking system. And the fluctuating foreign exchange rate also poses a huge risk, economists say. In a bid to minimize such risks, the central bank should diversify its existing US dollar-dominated foreign reserves structure, and increase its holdings of euros or other major international currencies, said Li Yongsen, a finance professor at Renmin University of China. The central bank, he said, could also buy more state bonds issued by other major economies and decrease holdings of US Treasury bills.

57. This pisses me off...
Let's ask Mr. Bush why the Chinese like to save...

Maybe it has something to do with 3000 years of famine, war and social unrest. The Chinese know to hold on to what they have and to avoid debt like the plague because it could all be gone tomorrow- a lesson that far too few Americans have bothered to learn.

It's like a five year old lecturing his parents on how to spend money (Candy! Toys!) when they're trying to pay the rent.

... in his pocket? I know that this is theoretically impossible (like crating up a black hole), even though they tried to teach us about negative numbers back in grade school. ("George has seven dollars and he gives his good friend Halli three dollars, and gives his other good friend Burton six dollars, so how many is he left with?")

But I dunno -- maybe he's more clever than he lets on.

p.s. Maybe the reason why he doesn't get sucked into his own pocket is because he sucks even more strongly?
