Study: Fat, boozing mice stay healthy
Huge amounts of a red wine extract seemed to help obese mice eat a high-fat diet and still live a long and healthy life, suggests a new study that some experts are calling "landmark" research.

The big question is, can it work the same magic in humans?

Scientists say it's far too early to start swilling barrels of red wine. But they are calling the latest research promising and even "spectacular."

The study by the Harvard Medical School and the National Institute of Aging shows that heavy doses of red wine extract lowers the rate of diabetes, liver problems and other fat-related ill effects in obese mice.

3. we should be able to get red wine extract from all of that cheap crappy
hangover-y red wine. imagine if we could get it in pill form...

and another thing, it's unfair to call them "boozing" when they aren't drinking booze. sheesh.

If it's wine extract, I would guess minimal.

12. What happens to the cats who eat them?
I'm sure fat, drunken mice are easy to catch, so it I suppose it would be non-adaptive for mice to stuff their little faces and drink themselves silly as a routine practice. But if there were a lot of such mice around, and cats ate them, would the cats get coronary artery disease from all that greasy food? And would they get wasted, too?

26. I was a fat, boozing mouse in my younger years
and I'm here to tell you it did NOT keep me healthy. They fail to take into account a minor component of wine called "alcohol". An excess intake of that ingredient more than offsets any other "benefit" of large amounts of wine.

Trust me on this one. I tried it.

27. That's why they're talking about extracts.
Edited on Thu Nov-02-06 10:41 AM by drm604
You can purchase extracts that don't contain any alcohol but do contain concentrated resveratrol, which seems to be the ingredient which produces the health and longevity effects. A number of months back I posted a link to a Scientific American article on this very subject. If I can find my original post I'll link to it from here.
