More than 10,700 snared in fugitive roundup
http://www.suntimes.com/news/nation/121759,fugitive110206.article

WASHINGTON---- Nearly 11,000 fugitives, including sex offenders, gang members and others wanted on a variety of charges from kidnapping to weapons offenses, were swept up last week in a 24-state operation, the Justice Department was to announce Thursday.
Among the fugitives caught were 1,659 sex offenders -- including 971 who failed to register with authorities as required by law -- in what the government called the largest number ever captured in a single law enforcement effort.

The sweep, led by the U.S. Marshals Service, ''has made our nation's neighborhoods and children safer by taking off the streets some of the worst sex offenders, violent felons and gang members,'' Attorney General Alberto Gonzales said in a prepared statement.

6. The timing is criminal in itself.. Why did Gonzo leave these criminals
on the street for so long? For political gain?

and holding them without charging them with any crime.

13. Maybe they did?
11,000 is a lot of people...wouldn't take much to load the list with political 'operatives' by mistake -- seize their computers, personal effects, blackberrys (have a look) and keep it until after the election -- then drop the charges with the usual...'our mistake, Sir' crap.

Any large federal police action so close to an election is suspicious and dangerous -- regardless of the alleged motives.

16. Or just plant the evidence on the computers.
Then they don't have to let them go or face charges of false imprisonment.

10. This has been a test of the emergency American round-up system.
Edited on Thu Nov-02-06 12:22 PM by olafvikingr
If this were a real emergency you would already be in custody.

Don't you normally arrest criminals immediately when you are able, and not wait until you can do 11,000 at once?

On edit: It seems to me there are only a couple reasons to do it this way.

1) Practice
2) Publicity

You would do it this way if it was a big sting in which this was a great network of criminals involved in some grand operation together. Drug cartel for example. mob bust. You know, organized crime types of things. Like speaking out against the president.

19. Your post seems to have the mose sense in it.
Either through publicity or through practice, Gonzo is measuring his dick with this.

From the data below (arresting people already in jail), it looks more like a publicity stunt than an actual practice round-up of large groups of people. As is typical, the pukes are padding their numbers.

12. The numbers don't add up: they arrest 11000 dangerous fugitives and net 200 guns?
From hundreds of gangbangers and thousands of "others sought on kidnapping, robbery, burglary, carjacking and weapons charges"?

The number of arrests is about one per minute over the week. If you imagine pairs of officers sweeping out to do this, and figure that an arrest takes a pair two hours (grab the guy, take him in, do the other routines), there's no way to do the arrests in that period with less than about a thousand officers.

But the story says "Hundreds of state and local law enforcement authorities" and then adds that the "totals represent a fraction of doors knocked on, liquor store drive-bys, construction site surveillances and tips chased down by agents during the weeklong sweep."

The true story will be much less exciting if it evder comes out.

Now we know why Bush Co. passed wanted that law. This is the equivalent of the first roundup of the "Jews" (1930's Germany comparison). The it'll escalate. And as we all know, if it gets out of hand, it can easily be used to political opponents.

27. They mention, first, sex offenders, then gang members. But look at the numbers:
"The dragnet captured 162 accused or convicted of murder, 638 wanted for armed robbery, 553 wanted for rape or sexual assault, 154 gang members and 106 unregistered sex offenders."

106 sex offenders, out of 11,000 fugitives.
154 gang members, out of 11,000 fugitives.

What a crock. I wonder how many unpaid parking tickets and hot check writers were rounded up, or maybe minor infractions for possession of pot, et cetera.
