Top Evangelical Denies Gay Affair
The leader of one of Colorado's most popular mega-churches, Ted Haggard, said his church would investigate allegations from a male prostitute that Haggard solicited gay sex, 9News reported Wednesday.
.
.
Male escort Mike Jones of Denver started talking to 9 Wants to Know two months ago, making claims that he has had a three-year sexual business relationship with Haggard, the station reported.
.
.
The station spoke to Haggard outside his home in Colorado Springs, and he fervently denied the allegations. Haggard is married and has five children.
.
.
Haggard has been one of the major proponents for a state constitutional ban on gay marriage.

Haven't seen any proof other than the claims of the hooker.

3. Hey, at least he didn't want to MARRY the guy
THAT would have been appalling.

And this is someone who claims to have a direct line to the White House

/didn't think the escort would have made the accusations without any proof, but the articles I saw on Google News didn't mention any proof

8. Investigation has been going on for two months.
Don't think they'd run with this story unless they were sure.

It should be interesting to see how this plays out over the next few days and if it gets play on the national nightly news.

We really can't trust our media to be the gatekeepers of what is credible anymore.

That's what Blogs are for now.

Also...

Dobson issues press release, repeating gay-hooker allegations against evangelical leader, in order to protest media publicizing gay hooker allegations

by John in DC - 11/02/2006 02:08:00 PM

Uh, thanks Mr. Dobson, you just told even more people about the details of a story that you think the media shouldn't be sharing details of. And you wonder why you're losing.
http://releases.usnewswire.com/GetRelease.asp?id=75600

(Dobson is probably the only other evangelical Christian leader as powerful as Ted Haggard, the guy alleged to have paid a gay hooker for sex for the past 3 years, and there are also allegations that Haggard used drugs - and I don't mean the Rush Limbaugh kind.)

21. That struck me, too
If my congregation's pastor was accused of some sort of misconduct, we wouldn't be doing any "investigation," we'd just ask him. Of course, since he's gay, we wouldn't give a rip if he had an ongoing relationship, and in fact, we've prayed for just that happy occurrence for him.

It must be exhausting being so fundy; you've constantly got to be on guard for all sorts of normal human behavior that you've deemed unacceptable, much of which isn't nearly as overt or obvious as a loving relationship with another adult.

38. Yep, as pastor of a progressive church, I must say
freedom to be human is a great gift! Ted should try it! Otoh, paying a prostitute of any stripe would get me in trouble.

As to what would happen if I were accused of improper behavior, well, the church I serve wouldn't do the investigating. Judicatories would. A congregation can be too invested in its pastor to be objective. Especially a church like Ted's--not part of a denominational structure, founded by him, etc. Why, even the church "spokeswoman" is his niece! How objective will such an investigation be?

22. Maybe they're right after all.
I mean let's say gay marriage were legal, would he leave his wife for the guy? I mean maybe he just wants to be married and women are the only option at this point.

So I suppose I should stop using my normal argument of "how would it hurt YOUR marriage if gays could marry?".

Damn - it was usually a good argument too, as, unless you've got a hankering to play for the other team anyway, there's no way gay marriage could affect a straight person's at all.

37. Well, I was actually just being a wise guy
But I suppose the answer is that if gay marriage were available, wouldn't gay people chose to marry people of their own gender in the first place?

I feel badly for the wife in your scenario, but let's face it, it wouldn't have been much of a marriage to begin with, based on that big an untruth, would it?

39. I was trying to be a wise guy too.
Just never could work out why gay marriage would hurt hetero marriage, despite that being the number one claim these nutjobs tend to make. It pisses me off every time some RW nut is being interviewed and they make that claim that the interviewer NEVER asks them the simple question "Wait a minute, it's not like we're talking about making gay marriage MANDATORY here - what harm could it do to your marriage?"

40. There IS no answer to that
Just as there is NO secular reason not to allow gay marriage.

They've got nothing, and the longer people ask questions, the more apparent that will be to more people. If their marriage is in trouble b/c John and Steve down the street just got married, then they had a pretty crappy marriage to begin with.

Pisses me off, too!

As a gay man, I do get a kick out of these things, even though I shouldn't.... While I have been lucky and blessed enough to not go through serious gay-bashing or intimidation, the stories of those who have, bred out of the preachings of men like this, make embarassments like this only just desserts.

Edited on Thu Nov-02-06 04:31 PM by IanDB1
It used to be that you never had prostitutes coming forward and saying they were having affairs with church officials and politicians.

But what has our country come to?

Why aren't these hookers keeping their mouths shut?

Where are their professional ethics?

If you pay someone to provide a service, then they should respect your privacy.

The Mayflower Madame never named names.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sydney_Biddle_Barrows

And yet we have people like Leola McConnell, a professional Dominatrix, violating her code of professional conduct to invade the privacy of George W. Bush by exposing the fact that he performed oral sex on Victor Ashe. Exactly why Bush appointed Mr. Ashe as Ambassador to Poland is their own business-- not ours. But I bet you have to give some pretty great head for Bush to give you a recess appointment as Ambassador to The United Nations.

And now, we have this latest prostitute coming forward and exposing yet another right-wing hypocrite.

Just because you blow strangers for a living is no reason to behave unprofessionally.

Now, I have no problem with someone exposing a right-wing hypocrite that they slept with for free.

But when a right-wing hypocrite pays you to have sex, they're not just a sleezeball-- they're also a customer.

And the customer is always right.

And if you're a gay male prostitute, the customer is also, usually, right-wing.

What ever happened to "The Hooker With A Heart Of Gold" we all used to know and love?
(See: Hooker with a heart of gold, From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hooker_with_a_heart_of_gold)

Is that species extinct?

Or have they all just packed-up their duffel bags full of extra underpants and opened mega-churches?

Our country is lost.

30. What IS it with those people?
The most hypocritical people I've ever met. I think they're drawn to the cult-type religions because they are desperate to deny who they really are. They can blame, what THEY think are shortcomings, on demons.

I'm tired of the demond defense. I'm tired of hypocrites.
