Edited on Thu Nov-02-06 02:28 PM by jannyk
5 counts murder (the firefighters) in 1st degree. Plus special circumstances (Arson). Can face Life without parole or death penalty. Will look for links... Here's the link: http://www.cnn.com/2006/US/11/02/socal.wildfire.ap/index.html

1. If he's convicted, he should serve his sentence fighting fires. . . |
|
on the front lines with people such as those he's said to have killed. Those firefighters will take good care of him. And who knows, maybe he'll be able to distinguish himself in a blaze of glory.

3. Yeah. . . you're probably right. . . |

I've been on the front lines of a forest fire -- last thing those guys need is an uncooperative amateur, or worse, the memory of his smoldering death.

7. I've lived in California more than 50 years. . . |
|
seen countless fires, fought a few when I was younger, and other than the possible psycho-sexual stimulation someone might find in watching a large blaze, I've never been able to understand what reason anyone might have to set a wildfire.
Wanton destruction of private possessions? The excitement endemic to the chaos of public reaction? The thrill of knowing you caused a major public incident and left a mark -- more a scar than a monument, but a mark nevertheless? None of it equals the aftermath. And in this case, that result left five good men dead (a result inherently possible whenever a fire is set, especially during the Santanas).

9. Logical and sane minds will never be able |
|
to fully understand why these people find such enjoyment from the horrible crimes they commit. My mom was born here in 1933, I was born here in 1953. We have, to say the least, seen a lot. This tragic loss of life for someone's pleasure is beyond redemption so I hope the maximum penalty is sought...and carried out.
It is also creepy to know that most of these maniacs are standing somewhere in the crowd that gathers watching what is going on.

11. From what I've read, it's a good thing they DO stand in the crowd. . . |
|
it's one of the ways the Arson Investigators are able to catch them.

17. Yes, you're right. If they can spot them, it's a good thing. |
|
But still, standing around watching people crying and in total panic... beyond human.

13. Um, why search for more obscure explanations |
|
The psycho-sexual stimulation is, to the best of my knowledge, exactly the reason.
Sometimes it is what it is.

12. They don't. That's up a Jury to decide. . . |

Fortunately, he'll have his day in court, and the evidence will either convict him or exonerate him. (Beauty of our system, though I wish it was geared more to finding truth than pitting two lawyers one against another.)

14. Really. Maybe they just want a scapegoat since he's done this before. |

And the media, people, etc. want someone's blood, anyone's blood, and they want it now and don't care who it is just as long as they pick someone.
