Abramoff could be sentenced in Washington
<snip>

"The imminent surrender of superlobbyist-turned-superinformant Jack Abramoff on a South Florida fraud conviction is eclipsing his starring role in a Washington corruption probe.

Abramoff is set to turn himself in on Nov. 15 to serve about six years in prison for lying to obtain a $60 million bank loan to buy a fleet of South Florida gambling ships.

Now, Justice Department lawyers and Abramoff's attorneys are rushing to have the once-powerful Republican insider sentenced two days later on a separate corruption conviction in Washington.

That way, they say, he can be imprisoned near Washington to continue to inform on dozens of lawmakers under investigation. Abramoff faces between nine and 11 years in prison.

This week, U.S. District Judge Ellen S. Huvelle might consider their request for the Nov. 17 sentencing in Washington."

2. Thanks...

... for the Abramoff news. I was starting to wonder if he wasn't being "hidden" from the mainstream. :kick:

3. Miami Herald: Abramoff could be sentenced in Washington
Abramoff could be sentenced in Washington

The imminent surrender of superlobbyist-turned-superinformant Jack Abramoff on a South Florida fraud conviction is eclipsing his starring role in a Washington corruption probe.

Abramoff faces between 9 and 11 years in prison.

This week, U.S. District Judge Ellen S. Huvelle might consider their request for the Nov. 17 sentencing in Washington.
Justice Department prosecutors fear that if Abramoff ends up being incarcerated hundreds of miles from the nation's capital, their complex influence-peddling probe would be seriously hampered or indefinitely stalled.

The reason: Abramoff would not be as readily available to make sense of thousands of sensitive documents, e-mails, computer files and other potentially incriminating records for investigators. While he has been free on bond, he has been working around the clock as an informant for the Justice Department.

The investigation, which is likely to affect next week's congressional midterm elections, has already netted a half-dozen Washington lobbyists and GOP Congressman Bob Ney of Ohio.
