U.S. Web Archive Is Said to Reveal a Nuclear Guide
Is this the story that Drudge is "bragging" about?

http://www.nytimes.com/2006/11/03/world/middleeast/03documents.html?hp&ex=1162530000&en=1511d6b3da302d4f&ei=5094&partner=homepage

Last March, the federal government set up a Web site to make public a vast archive of Iraqi documents captured during the war. The Bush administration did so under pressure from Congressional Republicans who said they hoped to “leverage the Internet” to find new evidence of the prewar dangers posed by Saddam Hussein.

But in recent weeks, the site has posted some documents that weapons experts say are a danger themselves: detailed accounts of Iraq’s secret nuclear research before the 1991 Persian Gulf war. The documents, the experts say, constitute a basic guide to building an atom bomb.

Last night, the government shut down the Web site after The New York Times asked about complaints from weapons experts and arms-control officials. A spokesman for the director of national intelligence said access to the site had been suspended “pending a review to ensure its content is appropriate for public viewing.”

Officials of the International Atomic Energy Agency, fearing that the information could help states like Iran develop nuclear arms, had privately protested last week to the American ambassador to the agency, according to European diplomats who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the issue’s sensitivity. One diplomat said the agency’s technical experts “were shocked” at the public disclosures.

4. Jesus Fucking Christ!
Is there no end to the idiocy?

Many times I've found myself gloating over things this administration has done to make itself look foolish, but I am not gloating over this. Of all the things they've done to harm our national defense and make the world less safe, this may be the worst.

Stupid. Fucking. Assholes.

8. No, there is no end to the idiocy.
Just when you think they've reached the height of incompetence, something else comes up -- I thought they'd hit bottom, but I guess not. If the NYT article is correct, it would appear that the Bushies and their stooges in Congress insisted on putting Saddam's pre-1991 nuclear research out there on the Internet to prove what an evil guy he was and oh, yeah, he really was trying to build a nuke, so there really were plans to develop WMD programs, so stop saying that. Only problem is, the other Axis of Evil dudes, like Iran, have the Internet, too.

Does anybody still have any doubts about kicking Republican ass next Tuesday?

So whatever it gave to the enemy came from the decider himself.

If the enemy can't figure out how to make an atom bomb themselves, well we just need to help them along a little.

17. here's some info:
from the article above

<snip>

The director of national intelligence, John D. Negroponte, had resisted setting up the Web site, which some intelligence officials felt implicitly raised questions about the competence and judgment of government analysts. But President Bush approved the site’s creation after Congressional Republicans proposed legislation to force the documents’ release.

And here's the top story from Faux last June:

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,200499,00.html

Report: Hundreds of WMDs Found in Iraq

WASHINGTON — The United States has found 500 chemical weapons in Iraq since 2003, and more weapons of mass destruction are likely to be uncovered, two Republican lawmakers said Wednesday.

"We have found weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, chemical weapons," Sen. Rick Santorum, R-Pa., said in a quickly called press conference late Wednesday afternoon.

...

As a result of this new information, under the aegis of his chairmanship, Hoekstra said he is going to ask for more reporting by the various intelligence agencies about weapons of mass destruction.

"We are working on the declassification of the report. We are going to do a thorough search of what additional reports exist in the intelligence community. And we are going to put additional pressure on the Department of Defense and the folks in Iraq to more fully pursue a complete investigation of what existed in Iraq before the war," Hoekstra said.

13. This is supposed to help the Republicans....how???????
This is about a manual from before the Gulf War that shouldn't be declassified for fear that Iran could use it. THis doesn't prove "WMD's found!, WMD's found!" but it merely re-highlights what we knew.

42. It's a big trap...
For years we've been yelling that Iraq didn't have WMD's, and they weren't pursuing WMDs. Now, in order to make the argument that * released sensitive material, WE have to argue that Hussein was up to "something" otherwise the information here wouldn't be of any use. Beyond that there seem to be many on our side of the aisle who accept, lacking other evidence, Iran's assertion that they are pursuing nuclear technology for strictly peaceful purposes. If you want to argue that this document release may help an Iranian nuclear weapons program, I think you'd have to admit that you believe they might have one.
