9,300 reservists to be mobilized over next 12 months

By Chris Amos
Staff writer

The Navy Reserve expects to mobilize 9,300 sailors during the next 12 months, according to briefing documents obtained by Navy Times and confirmed by Vice Adm. John G. Cotton, chief of the Navy Reserve.

That figure means that nearly one in three available reservists — not counting the 38,000 who have already been mobilized and the approximately 5,000 listed as not deployable for medical, dental, or other administrative reasons — will mobilize during the next year for deployments ranging from six months to more than one year.

Cotton said he does not believe the rate of mobilizations will exhaust the pool of available reservists; that is because the Navy Reserve’s 26 percent yearly turnover creates a fresh supply of deployable sailors every year, according to Capt. David J. Wray, spokesman for the Navy Reserve.

But most new reservists are prior-service sailors who enter from the active component as already deployable assets. Such sailors who have deployed within their last 12 months on active duty can ask that mobilizations be put off for their first year in the Navy Reserve. As of Oct. 31, there were 71,300 people serving in the selected reserve, according to Cotton.

2. To sit in the Persian Gulf and protect the Saudi OIL resources.
That is what our country is doing while soldiers without adequate protection or a plausible reason die. And lots of Iraqis. Go figure.

7. My nephew the navy lieutenant . . .
returned from a year in Iraq in August. He was working on communications systems and infrastructure in Baghdad, working with soldiers and reporting to the Air Force. This nonsense has been going on for at least 15 months.

And it ain't gonna get any better, if we don't get our act together on Tuesday.

9. They have submarine sailors with 3 days weapons training protecting convoys.
Sub sailors!

We pay millions to train them, then we send them to the desert.

5. It Does Not Take A Genius To Figure Out What This Means.....
At that time 47,300 naval reservists will have been recalled and deployed.

It means that recruitment of volunteers has not kept pace with need, and that there is an anticipated need for the additional 9,300 or they would not be called up.

I tend to agree that the most logical use would be to support protection of Saudi oil fields, and to keep the Straits of Hormuz open if there is an attack on Iran by either Israel or the US.

Anyone who does not see a draft on the horizon is kidding themselves unless the new Democratic Majority in the House and Senate finds a way to force Bush to redeploy our troops and obviate the need for reinforcements.

Something has to give, and obviously we are heavy into the reservists.
