(4600) ROTC applicants' data on stolen computer
A computer stolen from an office at Fort Monroe in Hampton contains personal information on about 4,600 high school students who have applied for Army ROTC scholarships, officials said.

But security features make it unlikely that a person without an access card and sophisticated passwords will be able to access the information, said Paul Kotakis, spokesman for the U.S. Army Cadet Command.

Kotakis said in a phone interview that his command has sent letters to the applicants whose data were in the computer. He said the laptop was stolen last Thursday from an office cubicle at the Cadet Command headquarters.

Kotakis said military law-enforcement officers are investigating the theft and hope to recover the computer.
