Once a long shot, Hall closes N.Y. gap
Edited on Fri Nov-03-06 04:40 AM by JCMach1
Pop songwriter John Hall has been hitting all the right notes in his congressional race against Republican Rep. Sue Kelly (news, bio, voting record).

Thanks to a blend of Democratic momentum, Stephen Colbert, YouTube and his own minor league celebrity, strategists say Hall — a long shot Democratic challenger — could topple Kelly, who has represented New York's 19th Congressional district since being swept into office as part of the 1994 GOP revolution... http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20061102/ap_on_el_ho/rocking_democrat

MAN, IT WOULD BE COOL IF JOHN HALL PULLS THIS OUT!!!!!

1. Sue Kelly was my congresswoman for a long time when I lived in NY
She was reasonably affable in person, but in congress she is and always has been nothing more then a Republican rubber stamp.

I hope she loses.

3. From the very beginning...
when I met John in the K of C hall in Lake Carmel, New York, I've been impressed with him.

My wife and I have been working overtime to help him get elected.

That bitch has got to go.

See www.take19.org for more.

5. I first became aware of John's environmental activism when he . . .
spearheaded the No Nukes concert with Bruce Springsteen, Bonnie Raitt, and a whole bunch of other folks back in the late 70s . . . his song Power became something of an anthem for the anti-nuke movement . . . I was thrilled to learn he was running in my district, and I've been doing whatever I can to spread the word to what has been a pretty receptive audience in this traditionally Republican district . . .

I think people are really ready for a change, and the more they see of John, the more they like him . . . he's sent weekly mailers to every voter in the district, each on a different topic, and they're very effective . . . there's also some national group that's sending out anti-Kelly mailings and running ads against her on cable tv (maybe on broadcast channels as well, though I haven't seen any yet) . . .

the bottom line is that Sue Kelly doesn't have a strong base of personal support in the district . . . there's no particular affection for her outside of maybe her home town, and her record in Congress is thoroughly undistinguished . . . for the most part she's a BushCo toady, voting the wrong way on virtually every issue of importance . . . to say that she's vulnerable would be an understatement . . .

the two largest newspapers in the district -- The Journal News (Westchester/Rockland) and the Times-Herald Record (Orange County) have both endorsed John, as has The New York Times . . . both of those local papers, btw, have endorsed Kelly in her past campaigns, so this is a big deal . . . I don't want to speak too soon, but I think it's looking very good for us in the 19th . . .

if you have a few bucks to spare, John has been relying almost exclusively on individual contributions (and lots of volunteers) to fund his campaign, while Kelly has a large bankroll from corporate PACs . . . even small donations help immensely, because he's getting a lot of them, and they add up quickly . . .

I'm looking forward to celebrating this victory next Tuesday evening . . .
