Poll shows increased support for banning gay marriage
Support for banning gay marriage in New Jersey grew in the days after the state Supreme Court ruled that gay couples should have the same rights as married heterosexuals, according to a poll released Thursday.

A little over half the Rutgers-Eagleton poll's 809 respondents favored changing the state constitution so that gay marriages would be banned. In June, a poll showed the opposite, with a little more than half opposing such a constitutional amendment.

In the poll, about three in 10 adults surveyed wanted to allow gay and lesbian couples to marry, while 4 in 10 wanted civil unions. Among likely voters, there was even more support for civil unions and less for gay marriage.

Gay marriage had more support in New Jersey in an Eagleton poll conducted in June. In that poll, 50 percent of respondents said gay marriage should be allowed and 65 percent supported civil unions. In the June poll, unlike the latest one, respondents could voice support for both and were not asked to choose between the measures.

3. Morning Bill! You're up early!
Damn....

Message to values voters;

Gays are the REAL enemy. Be afraid of two men caring for each other because that will make Hetero men want to try it too.

Americans can be such idiots.

2. what a bullshit 'poll'
the headline could just as easily have read, '70% favor equal rights for gay couples'.

there is greater support for civil unions -- there are many, many democratic party voters in new jersey.

there are many voters in new jersey who would vote for the party that would support marriage equality moving forward -- even though they say they are against it.

i would say that in new jersey at any rate -- there is a large segment of the population that wishes the decision for marriage equality would happen{the legislature should finish what the court mandated} -- in spite of how they feel and they could move on.

7. We have to rework the entire system
All states should stop issuing marriage licences immediately and being issuing civil unions instead. Let the churches "marry" people in the eyes of God, Jehovah, Allah, Budda, etc., according to the traditions, ceremonies, and religious requirements. Let the states join two people together into a legally binding union that offers legal conviences and protections, sets up property and inheiretance rights, etc.

In this fashion, even polygamy can be allowed, with religious ceremonies as needed for groups such as Mormons so they can be religiously complete, and groups that do not allow homosexuality or interfaith marriage do not have to feel that they are under attack, that the 'sacred' bonds of marriage are not being so liberalized as to become meaningless.

We could, in fact, expand the civil union concept into polygamy, as long as we have the restriction that before another person could join the multifaceted civil union, all other members of the civil union must sign off on it. I doubt it would be used often, but the option would be there.

8. The poll ASKED if lawmakers should ignore the court?
That was a push poll, not a survey.

My, but I'd like to see a list of those questions.

9. only the old goats want the ban
anytime you see the demographic breakdown younger folks support equal rights for gays.

It's the same as it was for interacial marriage bigotry in the 60's.

Hell, when my mother and father got married it was considered a "mixed" marriage because my mom wasn't Catholic. She converted to Catholicism to appease the bigots on the Catholic side of the family and never really forgave the bigots till her dying day.

So while it's no comfort to gays being denied their rights now, it is good to know that bigotry against gays will die with the older generation (at least die it down to a minority view that is).
