U.S. wants to head UN peacekeeping under Ban Ki-Moon

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - The United States wants to take over the large U.N.
peacekeeping operation from France when South Korean Foreign Minister Ban
Ki-Moon becomes U.N. secretary-general next year, a senior U.S. official said.

"We're trying," the senior U.S. official told Reuters, speaking on condition
of anonymity. The U.S. lobbying has been confirmed by two Security Council
ambassadors.

With the United States instrumental in Ban's election, the Bush administration
believes it has a chance to get the peacekeeping department of more than 90,000
troops, police and civilians, now headed by Frenchman Jean-Marie Guehenno.

But the move has been quietly greeted with dismay by some key ambassadors,
who fear the change would tie the world body, at least in spirit, to the American
military and the particularly the Bush administration's intervention in Iraq.

1. That's just lovely.
I was afraid Ban Ki-Moon would end up being a patsy for Bushco, and it seems that's the case. Bolton will run the UN.

6. That's never stopped Bush before. He does what he wants.
I fully expect him to try another recess appointment of Bolton.

2. Maybe it is time to disband the UN...
The Repubs I know have done nothing but criticize the UN for being a do-nothing organization. With Ki-Moon as a US tool in control & the possibility that Bush will have control over the 90,000 more troops, maybe it is time to shut it down.

3. If you believe just because a US general would be in command
of UN peacekeeping forces that it would mean that Bush could actually send them to the Sudan or Iraq, you don't understand how the UN works or doesn't work.

4. You're right... I don't understand the nuances of the UN, but...
I do see how this regime has twisted everything to their advantage & therefore do not trust them in any way. If there's a way for Bush to take control of UN peacekeeping forces, he will do it. No doubt in my mind.
