Breaking: White Powder found at Senator's Office

NEW YORK (AFP) - Police were called to the New York offices of US Democratic Senator Chuck Schumer after a white powder was found in a letter received in the mail, police said.


"A staffer at Senator Schumer's office opened a letter that was received in the mail with no return address and contained a white powder," Detective Kevin Czartoryski said.

Police later said that the powder was found to be not toxic but that an investigation would be carried out. A spokesman could not say whether the sender of the letter, if found, would be subject to criminal prosecution.

Letters containing anthrax -- usually in the form of a white powder -- were mailed to the US Congress, a television news office in New York and a tabloid newspaper in Florida in 2001. Five people were killed in the incidents.

White powder at Clinton office found non-toxic

(Harlem - WABC, October 27, 2006) - NYPD and Secret Service agents said the white powder found inside former President Bill Clinton's office on West 125th Street in Harlem has been deemed inert and non-toxic.
Late Friday night, several Clinton staffers were still being held inside the building as officials decide whether or not to decontaminate them.

Richard Staropoli, a Secret Service spokesman, said one of Clinton's staff members opened a package delivered to the office that contained a white powder and a letter and called officials around 3:45 Friday afternoon. Staropoli described the letter as a "rambling diatribe."

We are told that the former president was not at the office during the incident, but was at an event in Manhattan celebrating his three-day birthday bash -- a fundraising event for his foundation -- The William J. Clinton Foundation. His birthday, however, was in August.

I think he said something highly critical of the bush administration but I can't remember what it is.

As for this: "A spokesman could not say whether the sender of the letter, if found, would be subject to criminal prosecution," I thought people could be prosecuted for anthrax hoaxes. So, what gives? This is a Senator that's been figuratively attacked.
