2. They are going to feel the wrath of Bush for this act of betrayal.
He's going to go after them with a vengeance. Mark my words.

4. What is he going to do?
These papers aren't gov't run or funded. The most he could do is banned them from military installations and/or forbid any official news feed from the military to them. The first won't do any good because most military subscribe directly. The other will make the feed 'unofficial' and will ensure the criticism gets even uglier.

10. ".....forbid any official news feed from the military to them...."
This alone will put them out of business. Watch him do it. Executive order.

12. As said, they just get it under the table
There's cunning as an outhouse rat, then there's military beating the system. The rat wouldn't stand a chance. Plus, there would be one hellva stink from the lifers; they like and value the Times and I just don't mean the worker bees.

9. And the 'lifers', both officers and noncoms, value them
because they are supportive of the troops and tend to have a good bead on the overall situation.

Advance Copy of Military Times Editorial Calling for Rumsfeld Resignation
Submitted by Julie on Fri, 2006-11-03 21:38.

Advanced copies of the Military Times editorial to be published on Monday have been sent out to several media sources. Here is a snippet:

Rumsfeld has lost credibility with the uniformed leadership, with the troops, with Congress and with the public at large. His strategy has failed, and his ability to lead is compromised. And although the blame for our failures in Iraq rests with the secretary, it will be the troops who bear its brunt.

This is not about the midterm elections. Regardless of which party wins Nov. 7, the time has come, Mr. President, to face the hard bruising truth:

Donald Rumsfeld must go.

18. Not how Bush works.
Edited on Fri Nov-03-06 10:19 PM by grytpype
The more people tell him he's wrong, the harder he digs in.

The pressure on Bush is enormous, but I honest think he is too stupid to feel it. I'll be surprised if Rummy goes.

Maybe if Rummy just runs to a podium and says "I'm resigning." Don't let Bush say no.

16. Ain't gonna happen
What's he going to do fire himself? Cheney will fire him? Bush isn't in charge of anything except prancing around the country talkin tough and making himself look stupid while Rummy and Cheney do exactly what they want. They don't give a flying fuck who calls for their resignations, they are in charge and can't be touched as long as bush is the nominal president.

17. Every time bush calls him in to fire him, Donald shouts '911' and reminds bush he knows everything.
And bush gets all sweaty and stuttering and all and tells him, just joking, ha ha, you're doin a heck of a job.

20. Bush isn't being loyal or steadfast.
He simply lacks the balls to take charge of his own administration. If he fires his grown-ups he's on his own.

Time for Rumsfeld to go

<snip>

It is one thing for the majority of Americans to think Rumsfeld has failed. But when the nation's current military leaders start to break publicly with their defense secretary, then it is clear that he is losing control of the institution he ostensibly leads.

These officers have been loyal public promoters of a war policy many privately feared would fail. They have kept their counsel private, adhering to more than two centuries of American tradition of subordination of the military to civilian authority.

And although that tradition, and the officers' deep sense of honor, prevent them from saying this publicly, more and more of them believe it.

22. What do you say?
How do you answer this? It is a tragedy that things had to get so bad that the in-service generals had to break centuries of tradition and go public, to get someone to listen to how bad things are. How sad for our country.

And we should also respect, again, the courage of the generals who do speak up now, as they feel they have no recourse but to air their grievances publicly in order to protect our military.

24. This reassures just how rediculous this president is, he would appear wrong as Rumsfeld
by booting him out, so he stays his course to satisfy the neocons.

27. Now on MSNBC on-line
Just days after President Bush publicly affirmed Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld's job security through the end of his term, a family of publications catering to the military will publish an editorial calling for the defense secretary's removal...

"This is not about the midterm elections," continued the editorial, which will appear in the Army Times, Air Force Times, Navy Times, and Marine Corps Times on Monday. "Regardless of which party wins Nov. 7, the time has come, Mr. President, to face the hard bruising truth: Donald Rumsfeld must go."
