WP: Bush Says Iraq Radicals Could Play Mischief With Global Oil Supplies
Bush Says Iraq Radicals Could Play Mischief With Global Oil Supplies
By Peter Baker
Washington Post Staff Writer
Sunday, November 5, 2006; Page A06

GREELEY, Colo., Nov. 4 -- During the run-up to the invasion of Iraq, President Bush and his aides sternly dismissed suggestions that the war was all about oil. "Nonsense," Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld declared. "This is not about that," said White House spokesman Ari Fleischer.

Now, more than 3 1/2 years later, someone else is asserting that the war is about oil -- President Bush.

As he barnstorms across the country campaigning for Republican candidates in Tuesday's elections, Bush has been citing oil as a reason to stay in Iraq. If the United States pulled its troops out prematurely and surrendered the country to insurgents, he warns audiences, it would effectively hand over Iraq's considerable petroleum reserves to terrorists who would use it as a weapon against other countries.

"You can imagine a world in which these extremists and radicals got control of energy resources," he said at a rally here Saturday for Rep. Marilyn Musgrave (R-Colo.). "And then you can imagine them saying, 'We're going to pull a bunch of oil off the market to run your price of oil up unless you do the following. And the following would be along the lines of, well, 'Retreat and let us continue to expand our dark vision.' "

Bush said extremists controlling Iraq "would use energy as economic blackmail" and try to pressure the United States to abandon its alliance with Israel. At a stop in Missouri on Friday, he suggested that such radicals would be "able to pull millions of barrels of oil off the market, driving the price up to $300 or $400 a barrel."...

1. huh? Like, wtf has he done to global oil supplies over the past 3 years?
He's taken the #2 reserves out of the market. I doubt a collection of rag tag terrorists could do 1/10,000 the damage Dimson has done.

2. If it's not about oil then
they sure are benefitting from an unintended benefit with record topping profits.

It is really about slowing the golbal output of oil so the demand stays high and supply stays low. Big oil is the most crony capitalist of them all.

9. Welcome to DU. I entirely agree. If Bush had seized Iraq's oil &
used it for the American people--while it would have been highly immoral--I suspect his popularity would be much higher than the current 35%. Better yet, if he had invaded Saudi Arabia--after all 16 of 17 hijackers hailed from that most medieval of kingdoms--& used it for the American people, he would even have had a moral justification. The point is that Bush, being evil, could care less for morals or the American people; all that matters is power & money for his cronies & him.

3. My, my. Imagine that.
And with Iraq next door to Saudi Arabia, we could all
be fueling our cars with...nothing.

The incompetence of this maladministration is breathtaking.

4. Can we talk? You know; just one "Dark Vision" to another.
Could we lay out this 'vision thing' and see where we might be able to
chill out a little?

13. what do you think?
If you say chill out Bushites will call you a cut-n-run pu***

Sometimes being angry shows people you think what is and has happened is wrong, and that you are sorry.

It is only then that people will forgive you.

and now Bush is raising the fears of higher gas prices if we leave Iraq. I don't think people believe Bush like they used to before the war.

and installs a new solar/electric hybrid based on some awesome solar panel with over 50% efficiency.

I want stock in the company that gets that contract. do you think it would be a no-bid, like in Iraq?

16. Well why should our radicals be the only ones?
I swear the man doesn't listen to himself. We've been mucking around and spilling blood to control the oil markets for decades. Karma's a bitch. I just wish we didn't all have to pay for the myopic, greedy vision of our government.

18. They've got it backwards
What Bush is REALLY worried about is that the terrorists would flood the market with oil and drive the price DOWN.

Anyway, I didn't realize we were so dependent on oil from Iraq.

21. so true it hurts in the pants
It is really about crony capitalism to the max. Deflate the market supply and jerk up demand so that Halliburton, Chevron, Exxon-Mobil, etc. can accrue more monies in their quest for global domination.

"someone else is asserting that the war is about oil -- President Bush."

To send Americans to illegal "supreme crime" invasion.

To send Americans to kill; to die.

Blood for oil.

How is this not treason?
