by Mike Hall, Nov 5, 2006
Last week, a new study published in the New England Journal of Medicine found that fatal lung cancer can be detected at its very earliest stage in 85 percent of patients using annual low-dose CT screening and, when followed by prompt surgical removal, the 10-year survival rate is 92 percent.
More than 6,200 United Steelworkers (USW) were part of the study that was performed in collaboration with 38 institutions in seven countries as the International Early Lung Cancer Action Project (I-ELCAP). The USW study population was the second largest U.S. group enrolled in the project.
Until the study, it was believed that CT scanning was not an effective way to discover early signs of lung cancer and the disease’s high fatality rate resulted from an inability to diagnose the cancer until its later stages, where treatment options are limited.
The workers involved were U.S. Department of Energy workers at the Energy Department’s gaseous diffusion plants in Oak Ridge, Tenn., Portsmouth, Ohio, and Paducah, Ky. USW has partnered with Dr. Steven Markowitz of Queens College of the City University of New York to conduct this study, which is funded by the Energy Department.
