Texas governor's religious remarks slammed
SAN ANTONIO, Nov. 6 (UPI) -- Texas Gov. Rick Perry has drawn criticism from rival candidates for saying he agrees non-Christians are condemned to spend eternity in hell.

Perry was among some 60 mostly Republican candidates for Tuesday's midterm election attending a Sunday service at San Antonio's Cornerstone Church, where pastor John Hagee said in his sermon non-Christians were "going straight to hell with a non-stop ticket," The Dallas Morning News reported.

Afterward, Perry told reporters there was nothing in the sermon he could disagree with, prompting quick condemnations from opponents.

"He doesn't think very differently from the Taliban, does he?" said independent candidate Kinky Friedman. "Being obsessed with who's going to heaven and who's going to hell is kind of a pathetic waste of time."

3. Fundamentalist Christian Republicans need to come out of the closet--
I think the majority of moderate Christians and non-Christians have no idea of the radical views held by many of the Republicans in power.

I want someone to ask George W. Bush point blank if he believes that non-Christians go to hell and to ask him if he believes that the rapture is imminent. I would also like to hear how he believes the death penalty is Christian and what scripture points to Jesus supporting it.

I think most Americans have no idea how radical these views are and how they are shaping policy.

I would also like the Catholics to get a clue that most Fundamentalists are stridently anti-Catholic and believe that Catholics are hell bound as well.

Maybe they are totally aware and most others just don't understand... such as those that stood by, with bible in hand, and watched black men being lynched in the name of the Lord.

22. Many of these fundamentalists have sold their souls to the GOP.
At some point they came to identify with the GOP, and now, no matter what the GOP says, they go right along. I saw a story the other day where some big shot religious leader was trying to discredit global warming. Why in the world would a religious leader be on the side of pollution? Because the GOP is, in order to please one of their other constituencies, big business.

23. I don't believe George Bush is Christian
I think it's all an act. I think Karl Rove told Dubya to tell everyone he was "born again" and some other nonsense like Jesus is his "favorite philosopher" so simple-minded fundies would follow him through the valley of darkness like lambs to the slaughter.

He doesn't believe it for a minute. Never did. His actions speak louder than words. There isn't a compassionate bone in that body.

Wouldn't be so awful except that it obligates him to throw them a bone once in a while and that has made for some dreadful policy decisions.

I grew up in a predominantly Catholic area where religion is a deeply personal thing and most people are very suspicious of anyone who would try to force the issue in politics or public schools. That is certainly not the case in the Bible Belt.

The sooner the older, more established denominations discover the fundies are not their friends, the better off we will all be.

30. It boggles the mind
To see how effective Republicans have been at manipulating these people by pressing a few emotionally-charged hot-button issues that do not personally affect them one iota.

Except that they are truly afraid that we are all going to hell if they don't stop the people who disagree with them.

That Perry would make a comment like that doesn't surprise me. Asserting that all non-Christians are going to hell is a very safe thing to say in Texas.

And thanks for the welcome. I've been lurking around here for some time before finally taking the plunge.

41. back in the 90s he said himself he was a media creation
I concur it's all an act.

"While he lobbied franchise owners for support, Republican party officials kept trying to convince Bush that he ought to run for office. George talked it over with one of his oldest friends, Roland Betts. When Bush was Yale chapter president of Delta Kappa Epsilon, Betts served as DKE's rush chairman. And they had both been investors in Spectrum 7. Now they were both partners in the Texas Rangers. According to the book Fortunate Son, Bush confided to his friend:

"You know, I could run for governor but I'm basically a media creation. I've never done anything. I've worked for my dad. I worked in the oil business. But that's not the kind of profile you have to have to get elected to public office."

43. Tell me about it...
I live in Maryland, and once I went on a trip to Tucson. Both going there and coming back, I had a connection in Dallas-Ft. Worth... the place is friggin' huge (aside from their other forms of transportation, I remember they were building a monorail to service the place too), and all of it is madhouse. Busy busy busy. Especially when, as happened in my case, one arrives in the airport late and has to do the fastest half-mile run of one's life to make the connection.

5. There you go folks! A perfect example of the "sanity" of the religious.
No matter how good you are in this lifetime, you go straight to eternal damnation, hellfire, brimstome, sulphur smells, etc, you know the story, if you don't believe in my god. But the good people buy the kool-aid and drink it up and smirk with their better than thou attitude. Smirking is easy when one is intellectually challenged, Bush proves that every single day.

12. Perry is a politician, not a religious leader.
He had no business being in that wacko's 'church' (I use that term loosely), essentially campaigning, so there's a lot wrong with the Governor of Texas chumming with Hagee and supporting his idiotic beliefs. Hagee is THE cheerleader for Armageddon.

33. That is correct. The point is, after all, to save people
So when the Christian say "the only path to Heaven is through Jesus", they are expressing a belief. A belief that they work very hard to make everybody believe is fact.

Irregardless, it's in poor taste to be smug about it. "Hey, I'm going to Heaven because I've found Jesus, have you?" is not a good attitude to take in life, IMHO.

This is why you DON'T elect religious nuts as political leaders. They have no ability to differentiate between religion and government, nor do they care to, and seek to advance their religion through any means necessary, including laws, court rulings, and law-enforcement.

The Constitution and the theocrats are always at odds because they are fundamentally in opposition. People like John Kerry can keep their religion private largely seperate from their job in government and thus put the Constitution above Scripture. People like Bush cannot, and put Scripture ahead of the Constitution. In fact, they see the Constitution as an obstruction to proper evangelicalizing and saving of souls.

When I was dating my ex, her family was (and I still is) evangelical Southern Baptist, and her father (damn him and his overbearing wife to Hell) is a SBC pastor. I had to go to a few events at her private Christian school. Plays and such. And I stood thunderstruck the first time I was there, because after the Pledge of Allegience, they had ANOTHER pledge. The Pledge to the Christian Flag.

I am not making this up.

And it gets better!

THEN, they had a Pledge to the Bible.

PLEDGE TO THE CHRISTIAN FLAG

I pledge allegiance to the Christian Flag and to the Savior for whose Kingdom it stands. One Savior, crucified, risen, and coming again with life and liberty to all who believe.

PLEDGE TO THE BIBLE

I pledge allegiance to the Bible, God's Holy Word, I will make it a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path and will hide its words in my heart that I might not sin against God.

http://www.christianhomeschoolers.com/christian_pledges.html

In general terms Republicans would rather burn the Constitution while wrapping themselves in the flag, and Democrats would rather burn the flag while wrapping themselves in the Constitution.

There are so many personalities involved and a lot of mud-slinging.

Just remember, under Gov. Perry, TXDot has the first major road project in Texas ever where the public is not allowed to participate-- the Trans-Texas Corridor. It's another no-bid contract. Enough is enough, Texans!

Ask yourself: Will your land be next?

Don't let the Republican big-business machine control Texas any more!

Let's take it back!

TCC:

• 580,000 acres of eminent domain
• Foreign Controlled Toll Roads
• Largest Land grab in Texas History.
• Ignores the will of Texans.
• Corporate welfare for Perry donors.
• Ignores Private Property Rights

42. Well, when you consider this, along with....
what I posted in the Texas forum recently:

http://www.texasgop.org/site/News2?page=NewsArticle&id=6205&gclid=CPH97Py6mYgCFSMeWAodOlSiYQ

According to an article published in the El Paso Times, Ben Franks states: “I’m an atheist…”

All elected or appointed officials in Texas must take the oath prescribed by Art. XVI, Section 1(a) of the Texas Constitution:

"I, _____ , do solemnly swear (or affirm), that I will faithfully execute the duties of the office of _____ of the State of Texas, and will to the best of my ability preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution and laws of the United States and of this State, so help me God."

Should Franks be elected in November, one would have to conclude that he will hold true to his out of touch “atheist” belief system and ignore the laws and Constitution of Texas. Mr. Franks is a personal injury trial lawyer practicing in Texarkana, Texas and is the Democrat nominee for the 6th Court of Appeals.

I guess that since the pugs think that atheists do not have accountability to the Constitution, then it also follows that if Jewish, atheist, Muslim, etc constituents are going to hell anyway, then their concerns shouldn't matter much in the here and now. After all, why go out of your way for someone you won't be spending eternity with :sarcasm:

51. At least in hell you're safe from JWs

Since Witnesses know that there is no hell, no life after death except for the JW's who will be in Heaven.

Sadly, heaven is (or used to be – they may have updated this) of limited size and will only hold 144,000 souls: All JWs of course.

Interestingly, the Holy Mother Church disagrees, and considers Witnesses as Hellbound as Methodists.

Other than the Hell issue, JWs do have some things right: All pastors represent the Antichrist, All churches (not Kingdom Halls) are of Satan, and Satan controls all governments.

My point?

Superstition does NOT belong in politics.
