USS Intrepid sail stalled as vessel gets stuck in mud
The Associated Press
November 6, 2006, 11:32 AM EST

After 24 years at the same Hudson River pier, the mission to move the legendary aircraft carrier USS Intrepid for a $60 million restoration was scrubbed Monday when the floating military museum became stuck in the mud.

The mission was called off for the day at around 10:30 a.m., according to Dan Bender, a Coast Guard spokesman.

As six tugboats strained to move the behemoth, the Intrepid's giant propellers got stuck in the mud. It eventually began inching backward out of its berth but moved only about 15 feet.

"She is stuck in the mud. We were able to move her 15 feet, and then she came to a halt. We tried to add more power with another tugboat but we couldn't wiggle her free," said Jeffrey McAllister, the chief pilot of the tugboat operation.

4. Sort of like the FReepers homes, cars up on blocks, old washing machines
in the yard, shotgun and Bud laying on the table.

8. CV-11
I have the model of the original version of the famous vessel
And also the video version.
After watching the video of the Intrepid you will have tears in your eyes,
after Reagan gives out a medal to one of the gun crews that performed heroically
that day when they were hit, and it took that long to get that medal in the mid 80's.

Hit by numorous kamikaze's it was nicknamed the 'Evil I'
I have never been on the museum, and now will have to wait
another 2years to view it.

Edited on Mon Nov-06-06 02:33 PM by Roy
I spent a year and a half of my life on that 'Boat' back in the 60's.

Sadly, I have not revisited her since she was converted to a museum, lots of memories there good and bad.

That's what those of us in boating refer to as a "shallow water event".

over the Hudson there, too.
