TOLEDO, Ohio - ...

The scandal has been an embarrassment for Ohio's ruling Republican Party, and the trial has put a spotlight on their troubles in the week's leading up to the election Tuesday...

Democrats say he got the money because of his political connections. The scandal has permeated campaign advertisements and debates for state offices...

Prosecutors have not said whether he used the money to make campaign contributions to Republicans, including President Bush and Gov. Bob Taft.

Noe, in a separate case, pleaded guilty earlier this year to funneling $45,000 to Bush's re-election campaign and was sentenced last month to two years and three months in federal prison. He won't begin that sentence until after the state charges are resolved...

Noe unlikely to testify as defense steps up

Last week, near the end of his cross-examination of Tim LaPointe, Tom Noe's defense attorney, John Mitchell, peppered Noe's co-defendant with questions.

If Noe had participated in Mr. LaPointe's admitted phony inventories as he claimed, did Mr. LaPointe have any e-mails, notes, or letters to prove it?

When Mr. LaPointe answered "No," Mr. Mitchell asked him if the jury would have to rely on his word.

"Myself and Tom Noe could tell you, yes," Mr. LaPointe said...
