Fired Evangelist Slams Gays in New Movie
Fired Evangelist Slams Gays in New Movie
Monday November 6 1:55 PM ET

The Rev. Ted Haggard has been fired amid allegations of gay sex and drug use, but the evangelical leader can still be seen at the height of his powers preaching to thousands and condemning homosexuality in the documentary "Jesus Camp."

In one scene of the film, which follows a group of children as they develop evangelical Christian beliefs, directors Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady visit Haggard's 14,000-member New Life Church in Colorado Springs, Colo. He tells the vast audience, "We don't have to debate about what we should think about homosexual activity. It's written in the Bible."

Then Haggard looks into the camera and says kiddingly: "I think I know what you did last night," drawing laughs from the crowd. "If you send me a thousand dollars, I won't tell your wife."

Later, another joke for the filmmakers: "If you use any of this, I'll sue you."

1. Attention high school and college students!
Ever think of psychiatric counseling as a career choice? There's gonna be alot of screwed-up kids available for psychotherapy. I predict that at least half the kids who are being indoctrinated today will be pissed and screwed up by the time they reach 21.

2. I loved his "sexual immorality" quote to describe gay sex.
These people can't use the gay and homosexual word enough when they point fingers and damn people to hell, but have trouble internalizing when it is about them. His quote reminded me of the old Woody Allen joke. If sex doesn't feel dirty, you are doing it wrong. Sign me up for sexual immorality.

It'll make for a fine vignette in the "special features" portion of the DVD release.

7. What????
Edited on Mon Nov-06-06 05:35 PM by DeSwiss
They're just slamming just gays in the Jesus Camp movie? What about all those other miscreants mentioned in the bible? Why is there no slamming of divorcees who help money-changers avoid prison for stealing from depositors?

Or the lepers?
http://www.leprosy.ca/atf/cf/{3B422F46-F1B0-456B-9C29-14D45D964C11}/image1.jpg

Or, women with "issues" who aren't supposed to be seen or touch anyone? (Matthew 9:20)

Or those brothers (and I guess sisters too) of Onan? You know -- the masturbators?

How can they let these people off the hook? Of course there's nothing in the bible about using meth.

So I guess that's something we can't hold that one against him.....

18. Last 2 paragraphs may just bite after today
Haggard also leads the audience in praying for President Bush to select a Supreme Court nominee who supports their beliefs (it would end up becoming Samuel Alito) and later brags about the rapid expansion of evangelicalism.

"It's got enough growth to essentially sway every election," Haggard says with a smile. "If the evangelicals vote, they determine the election."

If they ever start thinking for themselves the Repubs are going to regret waking them.
