Iran calls for execution of Saddam

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — Iran called on Iraq on Tuesday to carry out its death sentence on Saddam Hussein, saying the former dictator who waged an eight-year war against Iran in the 1980s was a criminal who deserved to die.

"We hope the fair, correct and legal verdict against this criminal ... is enforced," government spokesman Gholam Hossein Elham told a news conference.

...

"He is a criminal dictator. No doubt about it," Elham said of Saddam. "We hope no pressure will be applied not to carry out this verdict."

1. Sentence, Iran. Sentence. The verdict hasn't been unveiled yet.
Or maybe something was lost in translation.

9. ???
Saddam was found guilty and sentenced to death by hanging.

Since he was sentenced to death, his case was automatically appealed.

10. But the list of his crimes and the reasons for guilt are still pending.
The sentence was rushed before the verdict.

15. Why so?
I, for example, am against the death penalty, and the fact that theocratic thugs are FOR it doesn't surprise me one bit.

3. I'm shocked
that they didn't have harsher rhetoric in the statement. Criminal dictator, is that the best they can do?

4. He's to die for war crimes, what more is there?
We are such a warlike culture, that we can read spite and malice in to things,
when people simply want justice.

Let's take a look at the highest profile cases Iran has hung in the last few years - the two boys who got caught for homosexuality - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mahmoud_Asgari_and_Ayaz_Marhoni and the 16yo girl who mouthed off to a judge - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atefeh_Sahaaleh

Yeah, lets listen to iran on who to hang...not.

12. Wow...surprise!!
Totally unexpected...

Actually if the Iranians were smart, they would have submitted a whole whack of war crime charges against him at the Hague/ICC, extradition requests, just to annoy the BFEE and then tell us 'all about how the US is not really interested in justice'.

It would also provide a great history lesson to those unfamiliar with the LAST TIME Iran requested a criminal be extradited to face the Iranian justice system.

....anyway...one last one....moving right along...in the interests of bandwidth...and you get the point!

Ravi: "Do you think the US might support my government in Iran"
Roosevelt: "With your oil and our support, you got a great future kid...now match me"

13. Iran wants Saddam tried for invasion of 1980.
"The Iranian spokesman said his government hoped Saddam would continue to be tried for other alleged crimes against humanity, including his invasion of Iran in 1980, starting a war that killed more than a million Iranians and Iraqis"

By that standard Bush should be tried for starting a war and invasion that killed untold millions of Iraqis.
