Democrat Strickland Beats Blackwell for Ohio Governor

Nov. 7 (Bloomberg) -- Democratic U.S. Representative Ted Strickland defeated Ohio's Secretary of State Kenneth Blackwell in the race for governor, returning the seventh most-populous state to Democratic control after 16 years under Republicans, according to projections by CNN and other networks.

The victory makes Strickland, 65, the first Democratic Ohio governor since Richard Celeste, who served from 1983 to 1991. Incumbent Robert Taft, a Republican, was first elected in 1998 and couldn't seek re-election because of term limits.

Blackwell, 58, said during the campaign that he had stopped tax increases and limited state spending in his time as state treasurer and secretary of state, while saying Strickland voted against tax cuts and to take the phrase ``under God'' out of the Pledge of Allegiance. Strickland ran against corruption under Republican rule.

Taft pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor in August 2005 for not disclosing gifts from supporters, including Republican fundraiser Tom Noe, who was sentenced to more than two years in prison in September because of illegal contributions to President George W. Bush's re-election campaign.
